Orleans Rebels win bronze at Canadians
from Scott Searle
The Orleans Rebels won the Bronze Medal at the Senior Women Canadian Championships in Kitchener on Sunday.
The team lost 4-1 to eventual champion Kitchener Krush in the undefeated game at 12:00 to set up a re-match with the Defending Champion Manitoba Smittys. The Smittys have won 9 of the last 13 Canadian Championships and won the right to play in the semi-final by defeating Whitby 2-1 behind a dramatic 2 run bottom of the 7th.
The Smittys sent former National Team member Ashley Lanz to the circle to face the Rebels and the Orleans team countered with 18 year old Raegan Turner. They were perfect for 6 innings as the score was knotted at 0, before Manitoba pushed through a run in the top of the 7th on a pair of hits. The Rebels couldnt respond and lost a heartbreaker 1-0 and took the bronze medal.
Manitoba ran out of gas in the final, falling to Kitchener 5-0.
A great year for the young Rebels as this was their first time qualifing for Senior Nationals and a big accomplishment as a result of their young age. The team has only 2 players who are Sr age, so they look to be very competitive for a very long time.
