Caveman plays well in Fitzroy Team 1 victory

The Caveman had a good showing in his first game called up to the bigs this season in Atom 5-pitch Softball. With the Fitzroy squad shorthanded, he filled in for a game against Carp.

Things were a bit worrisome when 9 of my "regulars" showed up when I was expecting only 8. Initial thought was that I was going to have to break the Caveman's heart and sit him down, and that would not have went over well. Problem resolved when the opposing Carp coach said no worries, just play 10 in the field.

The issue with the 10 players did not last long - one of our other fielders received the highly unusual parental ejection. This young lad, we'll call him Arnold, was playing in the dirt and his dad (we'll call him Abe), a good friend of mine and former fastball player himself, shouted at young Arnold to "stop playing in the dirt and pay attention". Then Arnold turned toward Abe and gave him the finger. So, that didn't go over well with his dad and he was dragged off the field and home to bed without the obligatory freezie.

Thus we were back down to 9 and it was a good thing Caveman was there.

Caveman was a strong 2 for 3 at the plate, hitting the ball in play at every at bat. Even when he was thrown out one time at first, he didn't take a fit, cry or attempt to attack any of his opposing players, which was a good sign.

He also fielded several balls in the outfield and did a pretty good job running them down and throwing them into his brother in the infield. "Daddy, that was good, right Daddy?" He also was quick to offer some assistance shouting in with the count from centre field "Daddy, that kid missed four pitches, right Daddy? So just one more or he's out, right Daddy?"

And as a good coach should, I learned my lesson from last year's "incident". When the Caveman was on in a "last batter" scenario, I gave clear instructions to the little speedster behind him to stay a few feet back to avoid any major collisions!

All in all, a good night at the park.
