West Carleton 5-pitch league update

Figured it was time for a West Carleton Minor Softball 5-Pitch Atom League update.

Fitzroy Harbour Team #1 played in Dunrobin tonight. The Dunrobin ranks were depleted a bit due to the Taylor Swift concert at SBP. Hopefully the Kars / Carp GOFL game wasn't similarly affected this evening.

Fitzroy Fastball Junior is playing well and I'm proud to say he's one of the stronger players on the team. He's hitting the ball well, really coming along with his fielding and certainly has some "ball sense" unlike some others. He assisted on a nice 5-3 put out in today's game. Believe me, that doesn't happen often in this league. He also gave catching a try tonight. When I told him he should play catcher like "Beefy Steve" he got into a classic catcher's crouch and set up a target for the coach pitching for the other side. Steve Johnson, role model! While he is playing well, he has unfortunately inherited a family trait of extremely slow foot speed - in this, he clearly takes after Mrs Fastball.

The Caveman may be looking at a career in broadcasting. He's still playing t-ball so he wasn't suited up tonight for Fitzroy, but he was there watching. He has this peculiar repetitive way of speaking - one of the many reasons he's the Caveman. For every play we got a shouted comment "Daddy, that was an out Daddy!", "Daddy, he was safe right Daddy", or when the neighbour's kid missed all five of his pitches "Daddy, that's not good hitting, is it Daddy!"

The best player on our team would be the oldest of "les freres". Yes, we have French people in Fitzroy - probably more than in Quyon. Le frere made a great unassisted double play at shortstop, with the tag on the runner and stepping on second base. Again, you don't see these too often in 5-pitch. Le frere can also hit the ball hard. They use these 11 inch training softballs so they don't hurt that bad if you get whacked with it, but they can still leave a mark. Keep in mind the coach (i.e. me) is pitching to his own team, and we are in there fairly close. So when the older frere drove one back at me, I just got turned in time to avoid a "Sami Salo". Ha ha ha from the lady coach on the other team. Not funny, lady, not funny at all. Also not funny was the fact that it went off my hip directly to third baseman to give Dunrobin an out!

Anyway, 4 games over, 8 to go, lots of fun and looking forward to the big tournament on June 19. Who needs the ISC Qualifier when you have the Atom 5pitch West Carleton Championship?
