Kars takes game two 10-0 over Quyon, Porter throws no-hitter
from Chad Milne
Kars travelled to
Quyon Thursday night looking to even their GOFL playoff series with the Flyers at a game
apiece. Backed by a stellar, no-hit pitching performance from Brad Porter, the
Aces came away with a 10-0 victory in a game called after 5 innings due to the
mercy rule. Matt Greer took the loss for Quyon.
After a scoreless
1st inning, Kars opened the scoring in the 2nd. With two
out, Jeff Hopkins walked and was driven home when Matt Pollard ripped a
two-strike pitch into centre field just out of the reach of the diving Quyon
centre fielder. After getting the Flyers in order in the 2nd, the
Aces sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of 3rd scoring 6 times,
highlighted by an opposite field 3-run home run by Danny Powers.
Porter set down the
Flyers in order again in the 3rd inning and the Kars offence went
back to work in the top of the 4th, sending 8 batters to the plate
and adding 3 more runs. Danny Powers narrowly missed his second 3-run homer of
the game, belting a high fly ball off the top of the fence in centre field that
cashed in 1 run. Up next, Hopkins chipped in with an rbi single and then with
two out, Porter stroked an rbi single to right field to stretch the Kars lead to
10-0.
Respecting the
Flyers ability to score runs and come back in any game, Porter didn’t let up and
powered through the 4th and 5th innings, getting all 6
batters he faced to secure the no-hitter and the shutout. If not for a misplayed
groundball by the Kars third baseman in the top of the 1st inning,
Porter would have earned the perfect game.
This series is now
on hold while members of the Quyon team attend the Canadians next week. The
3rd game in this series is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday,
September 3 at 8:30pm (location to be determined).
