West Carleton Electric wins "B" title at Cobourg Tournament Intermediate tournament - UPDATED

At the Jim Bradford - Neil Cane tournament in Cobourg, West Carleton Electric finished the round robin in the Intermediate / Junior / Masters division with a 1-2 record and won two on Sunday to claim the "B" title.

Saturday
Oshawa Bombers 2 West Carleton Electric 0 - in 11 innings
To start the day off on Saturday at 8:30, West Carleton and the Oshawa Bombers matched up for an extended pitchers' duel that went 11 innnings before runs were scored. Ryan Swift had the win for Oshawa, striking out 21 and allowing only one hit. Andy Barber was the hard luck loser, striking out 12 and allowing only five hits.

Cambridge Rusty Jiggers 8 West Carleton Electric 1
The Electric did not get off to a good start in their 2:30 pm match up with the Rusty Jiggers, who eventually finished the round robin as the #2 seed. Martin Mauviel went the distance for Cambridge. Jason Smith took the loss for West Carleton and had relief from Andy Barber. Barber hit a solo shot to score the only run for West Carleton.

West Carleton Electric 11 Oshawa Rebels 1
The bats for Fitzroy finally came alive in their third game of the day as the beat the Oshawa Rebels in a run-rule shortened game. Jason Smith earned the win, pitching a solid five innings. Travis Conner took the loss and had relief from Brian Mather. Jeff Barber had a home run for the Electric and Trevor Barton had a 3RBI triple. Oshawa had former GOFLers Marcel Mondoux, Ryan Mitts and Matt Medaglia on the roster.

In this division there were 10 teams, with the top six moving on to the playoff round and the bottom four going to a consolation round. With Napanee Juniors having a similar 1-2 record and allowing only 10 runs against compared to WC's 11 runs against, Napanee got the #6 seed, while the Electric finished 7th and are in the consolation round, with a 10:30 am game on Sunday morning.

1st: Colborne Rutherflo (3-0)
2nd: Cambridge Rusty Jiggers (2-1)

6th: Napanee Express Juniors (1-2)

Game 16 8:30 am: 3rd vs 6th
Game 17: 8:30 am: 4th vs 5th
Semi Final: 2:30 pm: 1st vs winner of G17
Semi Final: 2:30 pm: 2nd vs winner of G16
Final: 4:30 pm (UPDATE: Colborne ended up winning the "A" title over Curve Lake)

Consolation round:
7th: Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton Electric (1-2)
8th: Oshawa BB Juniors (1-2)
9th: Oshawa Rebels (1-2)
10th: Pickering Panthers (0-3)

Sunday:
West Carleton Electric 12 Pickering Panthers 6
In the consolation round semi-final, the Electric defeated Pickering 12-6 on Sunday morning. Jeff Barber earned the complete game win. Bill Stephenson was the losing pitcher, with relief from Bob Lewis and Rick Bowes. Derek Barber stroked a home run, as did Andy Barber who lost one in the bush behind the right-centre field fence.

"B" Final: West Carleton Electric 8 Oshawa Rebels 7 - in 8 innings
The win set up the "B" final set up a rematch for West Carleton against the Oshawa Rebels who defeated the Oshawa Juniors in the other semi-final. It was a dramatic finish in the bottom of the eighth as WC, after blowing a lead, come back to win 8-7. Jason Smith earned the win in relief, splitting the game with Andy Barber. Matt Davis took the loss for Oshawa.

West Carleton lead for most of the early part of the game, relinquishing the lead to the Rebels in the sixth. With the Rebels up 5-4 in the seventh, Fitzroy scored a run on a shallow sacrifice fly by Jeff Barber that scored Mike Cavanagh to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, the Rebels pushed two runs across to go up 7-5. However, the Electric were able to come back in the bottom of the inning to earn the "B" title, as Shawn Rebertz hit a single with two out and the bases loaded for the walk off win.

Ottawa Broker4Tickets went 0-4 in the open division - but with the exception of a Saturday night game with ISC World #5 Scarborough Force, the losses were all by one run.
