Stittsville 56ers Midget Girls win silver at provincials
On August 8th and 9th the U18 Midget Girls Stittsville 56er’s headed to Ancaster for the Provincial B Grand Championships. The first game matched them up against the Bramalea Slam.
Katie Wolf took the mound for the 56er’s in a thriller. The 56er’s took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 6th when, with two outs, a Bramalea player hit a rocket into the right field corner. An incredible relay from RF Jesse Duckett to 2b Rachel Ross and home to catcher Alex Demers saved the home run and made the final out of the 6th inning. That was the clincher in this one for Stittsville as they hung on to the 2-1 lead.
The second game of the day matched them up against the Cambridge Coyotes. Jenny David took the mound for the 56er’s and was unstoppable in this one. Stittsville scored a run in the first inning, a run in the second, three in third and three more in the fourth capped off with a Rachel Ross inside the park home run to stake the 56er’s to an 8-0 lead. J. David threw a one hitter over the 5 inning shortened mercy rule game and advanced Stittsville to the undefeated game vs. the Port Perry Angels.
The third game of the day got off to a rough start for the 56er’s. David took the mound again, but Port Perry’s bats were alive and staked them to a 5-0 lead. In the 4th however, the 56er’s started to crawl back and pulled to within two scoring three runs to make it 5-3. Unfortunately however, this game was not meant to be and the 56er’s uncharacteristically struggled a bit on both offence and defence losing this one 12-5. With the loss however, Stittsville moved directly on to the Bronze medal game awaiting the winning team to emerge from the losers' bracket.
Sunday morning saw Stittsville open up the same way they did on Saturday as the Bramalea Slam came up the hard way to test the 56er’s once again. Jenny David was on the mound yet again and the 56er’s bats started well, staking them to a 3-1 lead. It looked like this lead would stand up for the rest of the game as it remained 3-1 heading into the bottom of the 6th. However Bramalea wouldn’t go away. With a few well-placed bloops and a few hard hit balls, the 56er’s found themselves down 4-3 heading to the 7th. The Sixers however then came alive. A single by Erika Geoffrion, and double by Jenna Bjornson tied the game. Then back to back walks from Ryann Seiler and Jenny David loaded the bases for back to back doubles by Rachel Ross and Katie Wolf and Stittsville was back on top 8-4. Again however, Bramalea wanted to stick around. In the Bottom of the 7th a few more well placed bloops and one hard hit moved the score to 8-6 with runners on 1st and 3rd. Stitsville’s ace however remained unfazed as David induced the ground ball to Ross and sent the 56er’s on to the Gold medal game against the undefeated Port Perry Angels.
In the final game, Katie Wolf took the mound in a superb effort. The Sixers gave everything they had and kept the game tight. The Angels scored two runs in the 2nd inning and two more in the bottom of the 6th and held on to take the gold medal with a 4-0 win.
This is the first year that Midget Tier Two Fastball has returned to Stittsville. With a group of athletes from all across the region, they worked incredibly hard all season long to attain this goal and are thrilled to bring home the silver medal . Congratulations Ladies.
