West Carleton Electric evens series with Quyon

West Carleton Electric evened their best of three quarter-final Greater Ottawa Fastball League playoff series with a 2-1 win in Fitzroy Harbour on Monday night over the Quyon Flyers. A decent crowd was on hand on a pleasant night for fastpitch softball, including a special guest all the way from Newfoundland, as Trics Alumni Bud Hanlon made an appearance.

Andy Barber had the win, with a no hit performance, while Trevor Lahey pitched well in taking the loss.

Quyon scored their first base runner of the game - and he was to be the only Flyer to cross the plate. Dave Hobbs lead off with a walk, moved to second on Shawn Laframboise's sacrifice bunt, stole third, and made it home on an errant throw by the catcher.

West Carleton answered in the bottom of the first with a run of their own. Kevin Shonfield started with a walk. After a Trevor Barton single there were two men on, and Mike Cavanagh sacrifice bunted the runners over sixty feet each. On a dropped third strike on a 42 foot change up, Quyon got the out at first, but Shonfield managed to score to tie the game at one.

Quyon had good chance in the fourth as they loaded the bases with one out on a walk, an error and a hit batsman. However, Barber got out of the inning with a 1-2-3 double play.

In the bottom of the sixth with one out, Neil Murphy drove the first pitch he saw high over the right field 'grey monster' (almost hitting the Caveman who was playing scrub with Fitzroy Junior and three Barton boys on diamond two) to put WC ahead 2-1.

Barber closed the door in the top of the seventh, helped by a great stab by Murphy at first base taking what looked like a sure hit away from Lahey, and the home team won to even the series at a game apiece.
