Harbour Ball playoffs begin

The Fitzroy Harbour Men's Fastball League playoffs begun on Wednesday night in Fitzroy Harbour.

Gagnon Plumbing finished first in the seven team league and earned a bye to the semi-finals. The other six teams will play in best-of-three series.

Hicks Custom Interiors #2 and Clean Cut Construction #7 played a doubleheader to start things off. Hicks prevailed with a 9-2 win the first game and came back from a 5-4 deficit to win the night cap 6-5 and sweep the series. A key hit from Evan Campbell in the top of the seventh was the difference.

Ottawa Valley Coffee Espressomen #3 took a one game lead in their series over Baird Carpentry with an exciting 6-5 walk off win. Down 5-2 after six and a half, Colton Lecuyer hit an inside the park homer to tie the game, followed by a solo bomb by Conner Hopper to walk it off.

Grandor Farms #3 also won an exciting game 6-5 to take a series lead over the Bren Electric Logsplitters #4. After the Splitters got out to a 4-2 lead, a grand slam by Mitch Taylor put the Farmers ahead 6-4. The Splitters ground out a run to make it 6-5 in the sixth. Then, with two out, the Splitters' speedy Brett Almeida smashed a tailing liner deep to left field, which made it to the fence. Left fielder Tyler Graham hit Sean Lecuyer, the shortstop out to make the cut. The Splitters sent Almeida from third and a perfect throw to Grandor's catcher Brendan Coker was on target from Big Lec to get the out and end the game.

Playoffs resume next week.
