I4C Victory moves on to GOFL semi-finals
Carp I4C Victory moved on to the Greater Ottawa Fastball League semi-finals with a 4-1 win over Fitzroy Harbour WC Electric on Thursday night in Carp in Game 2 of their quarter-final match up.
Neil Cooke had the win for I4C while Brad Porter took the loss for WC Electric.
WC Electric started strong in the top of the first but only managed to put one run across, which came back to haunt them later in the game. Jon Daley led off with a single and was moved to first by a Beef Johnson sacrifice bunt. Michael Cavanagh hit an RBI single to score Daley, followed by a Shawn Rebertz single and a Troy Wilson bunt single to load the bases with one out. However Cooke got out of the inning with a pop up and strikeout.
I4C responded with a run in the bottom of the third. Matt McNish led off the inning with a single. With the hit and run on, the Electric was unable to get McNish out at second on a Eric Colvin ground ball and had to take the play at first. After a strikeout, lead off hitter Mike Money drove in McNish to tie things at 1.
In the top of the fifth, WC Electric had another great chance to score. Jason Armstrong led off with a single and was moved to second by a Jason Cope sacrifice bunt. Jon Daley then singled to shallow centre, but the charging fielder forced Armstrong to stop at third. Daley stole second to put two runners in scoring position, but again Cooke induced a pop up and a strikeout to end the threat.
Eric Colvin put I4C in the lead for good, taking Porter deep with a solo homer to centre in the bottom of the fifth.
Victory added insurance runs in the sixth. Tim Power singled with one out. Kevin McGuire then struck out but the pitch was in the dirt and the throw to first was misplayed. McGuire stole second. Brooks Paziuk hit a sharp grounder to short, but Michael Cavanagh made a nice defensive play to throw Power out at home. However, the next batter Shawn Simzer hit a clutch 2RBI single to cash some insurance runs.
Cooke struck out the side in the top of the seventh to seal the win.
Victory will now await the winners of the other three quarter-final series to determine their opponent in the semi-finals.
Both I4C Victory and WC Electric will be participating in the Elkland, PA Labour Day tournament next weekend.
