Stittsville takes Game 1 over Greely
from Sam Oliver
The Stittsville 56ers took the opening game of their quarter final series versus the Greely Eagles by a score of 8 to 1 in a five inning mercy shortened game. Dan Bradley pitched the complete game win while Shannon Borho took the loss with relief from Ryan Cox.
Stittsville opened the scoring in the bottom half of the first when Darren Featherstone hit a two out home run that would also plate John Craig who had singled giving the 56ers a two run lead.
Stittsville added two more runs in the 3rd. Darren Ladouceur walked to start the inning and scored on a Scott Herriot triple. Craig picked up his second hit of the night, an RBI double to make the score 4 – 0 in favor of Stittsville.
The 4th inning would see the 56ers extend the lead to 7. Scott Jessiman walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The next Stittsville batter, Sam Oliver singled driving in the run. Oliver advanced to second on a wild pitch, and took third on a Darren McCartney ground ball to second. Next, Ladouceur drew his second walk of the game, putting runners on the corners. This would be the end of Borho’s night - he was relieved by Ryan Cox. Ladouceur was replaced at first by pinch runner Adam Maheu who stole second uncontested. Both runs scored when Herriot doubled picking up his 2nd and 3rd RBIs of the night.
Needing to score to extend the game, the Greely Eagles pushed a run across in the top half of the 5th inning. Catcher Eric Sanchez singled to start the attack, and advanced to second base on a ground ball to the pitcher. Terry Jones hit a clutch two out single into right field to score the run.
Stittsville would respond in the bottom half of the 5th. Featherstone reached on an error by the Greely third baseman and would advance into scoring position on a Ryan Cox wild pitch. This would prove costly. Scott Parsons ripped a single to plate Featherstone and end the game.
