Stittsville wins 8-7 over WC Electric

The Stittsville 56ers held on for a 8-7 win in GOFL play at the Grove on Wednesday night.

Steve Cavanagh took the loss in relief of Bud Hanlon while Darren Featherstone went the distance for the home team.

Stittsville plated their first consecutive six batters of the game in the first off starter Hanlon. Dan Jessiman, Scott Jessiman, Dan Bradley (2) and John Craig all had RBIs in the first to stake out a 6-0 lead. Steve Cavanagh came in on relief with none out down by six and got the next three outs.

WC Electric responded with three in the top of the second. After Neil Murphy singled, Andy Barber walked and Derek Barber was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Trevor Barton's fielder's choice scored Murphy. Troy Wilson reached on a fielder's choice to score the youngest Barber. Barton scored later in the inning on Jon Daley's RBI single.

Stittsville put a single across in the bottom of the second frame as Scott Herriott tripled and scored on Dan Jessiman's RBI double.

Fitzroy closed the gap to 7-5 by scoring two in the fourth. Derek Barber reached on an error, stole second and scored on Jeff Barber's RBI two-out single. Daley then hit an RBI single to score J Barber but was thrown out trying to stretch into a double to end the inning.

The home side threatened in the fourth, loading the bases on walks to Herriott and Dan Jessiman and a single by Darren Ladouceur but Cavanagh got out of the jam with a strikeout and a pop up.

The 56ers' insurance run in the bottom of the sixth turned out to be the game winner. Darren Ladouceur hit a sharp comebacker off Cavanagh's left arm for an infield single. He advanced on Dan Jessiman's single and scored on Scott Jessiman's RBI single.

It looked like the 'Trics might even the game in the top of the seventh. Jeff Barber reached on an infield single and Daley singled with one out. Beef Johnson's RBI single put the game within two runs. After a K for the second out, Murphy beat out a grounder for an infield single to load the bases. Andy Barber walked to put the 'Trics within one run, but a ground out ended the game and preserve the Stittsville win.
