WC mites win in Westport
The West Carleton Mites team was in the beautiful village of Westport on Saturday for a U10 softball event, along with teams from Spencerville, Athens, and the host Westport Storm.
It was a great day for softball, a well run event and it was nice to see local 'Port legend Mike "Bundy" Seed and Newboro's Scott Rice as their sons were playing on the host team and they organized the day.
The ball was played at a very good level for mites, and the West Carleton boys pulled off three straight wins.
The second game against Athens had an exciting finish as WC won 8-7 in the bottom of the final inning on a walk off single by none other than the Caveman himself.
The final game of the day was between West Carleton and Westport, with both teams undefeated. While the game was marked by excellent defensive plays, some great hitting and good sportsmanship all around, the highlight for me and for many other attendees was the presence of "celebrity umpire" Shawn 'Pugger' Williams who donned the mask for the first time since the mid-90s and did a solid job calling balls and strikes. Pugger took one direct shot to the mask and another in the side of the head, but afterwards while enjoying a 'refreshment' he claimed to have enjoyed himself.
Congrats to Bundy and Ricer on organizing a great day of ball for the kids, and good luck to the Westport team as they are planning on entering the OASA Mite Provincials in August in Springbrook.
