Quyon wins two in Thursday night doubleheader

from Moe Laframboise

Game 1 – Flyers 8 Pirates 1

In game 1 of a rare doubleheader in Quyon the home town Flyers came out on top by an 8-1 score.  The game started a full hour late after late arrivals by the visiting team and the blue crew (due to the extremely long ferry lineup caused by the new highway 148 sinkhole).  Matt Greer got the start for Quyon while Kanata countered with Derrick Bulley.

Kanata took the lead in the top of the 1st.  Kevin Schonfeld led off the game with a single and scored on Joe Allan’s double over the left fielder’s head.  Greer would retire the next two batters on strikes before inducing a ground out from his counterpart Bulley.  Quyon answered back in the bottom half of the inning.  Shawn Laframboise led off with a single and advanced 60 feet on a passed ball.  He would later score on a 2 out RBI single from Randy Peck.

With one out in top of the 2nd Lindsay Medynski singled but was left stranded after two more ground outs.  The Flyers blew things open in the bottom half.  David Hobbs started things off reaching safely on a dropped third strike.  After two fly outs, Laframboise homered to left field.  Joe McCleary followed that up with a single and scored on Greer’s bomb to straightaway centre to make it 5-1 for the home team.

Both teams stranded a base runner in the 3rd.

Jason Smith entered the game to relieve Bulley in the 4th.  Laframboise walked with one out and advanced to third on Greer’s single.  He would later score on back-to-back walks to Randy Peck and Steve McCord.

Quyon added two more runs to invoke the run rule in the bottom of the 5th.  Hobbs led off with a walk and scored on Dennis McCleary’s walk-off shot to deep right field, final score 8-1 for the home team.

For effectively scattering 6 hits over 5 innings and contributing offensively with a homerun, Greer earns the Caveman’s Choice player of the game award.

Game 2 – Flyers 6 I4C Victory 1

In the second game of the double dip I4C handed the ball to Andrew Putnam while Quyon kept rolling with Greer.

For the second game in a row the Flyers would give up the first run to the visiting team’s leadoff batter.  Kevin McGuire was hit by a pitch to start the game.  With Adam Fleming squaring to bunt, a passed ball advanced McGuire to second and he promptly took third when the Flyers were napping and had nobody covering the bag.  He then scored on a Joe Murray ground out to third base.  Quyon answered back in the bottom half of the 1st.  Laframboise led off with a walk and advanced to second on a walk to Joe McCleary.  Both runners advanced on a passed ball.  After a ground out, Peck drew a walk to load the bases.  Steve McCord tried to catch the defense off guard by laying down a bunt, but Putnam made a nice play to make the glove toss to home just in time to get the lead runner.  With the bases still loaded on the FC Curtis “Gerv” Daley hit a clutch 2 out triple over the head of the right fielder to clear the bases.

The score stayed the same until the bottom of the 4th inning.  Putnam K’d the first two batters before surrendering a solo homerun to Dennis McCleary.  Laframboise followed that up with his second walk of the game and scored on Joe McCleary’s no doubter to right field.  After issuing two more walks, to Greer and Peck respectively, Putnam was able to get out of the inning with a fly ball to second base.

With two out and nobody on in the top of the 5th I4C decided to concede the game in order to make the last run of the ferry before it closed.

For his 2 out 3RBI triple, Gerv Daley earns the Caveman’s Choice player of the game.
