Saturday at the Shootout

Saturday results at the Carp Shootout men's fastpitch softball tournament.

East Hants Mastodons 3
Ottawa Valley Grains 3

The first game of the day ended in a 3-3 tie, with the Mastodons from Nova Scotia ending up even with the Ottawa Valley Grain team made up of Greater Ottawa Fastball players from three different teams. David Watson threw for East Hants, while Luc D'Entremont started and Alex Baillargeon finished for the Grainers. Brody Fraser hit a solo shot for the Mastodons to put them up but Tyler Branchaud's solo homer for OVG tied things up, which is how it ended. 

Micksburg Twins 10
Southeastern Ontario Screaming Eagles 4

The defending champion Twins got by the Screaming Eagles 10-4 in a game that saw Matt Greer, Jared Steege and Andy McIntyre all hit homers for the winners. John Enright got the win and Noah Fleurie threw in relief. Kyle Olson took the loss and had relief from Hudson Compeau.

East Hants Mastodons 9
West Carleton Electric U20 4

The Junior 'Trics got out to an early 3-1 lead, but the Mastodons came back to win 9-4 to stay undefeated. David Watson has the complete game win, while Kaden Fowler took the loss. Finn Barton had a homer and triple for the U20s and Carter Wright also hit one out for WC.

Vars Aces 10
Eastern Ontario Screaming Eagles 1

Vars won their second game of the Shootout 10-1, as Brad Porter had the win and Luke Severson threw in relief. Evan Lyndaker took the loss and had relief from Kyle Olson. Kristian Knapp had a homer for Vars.

Playoff Round

Micksburg Twins 7
West Carleton Electric U20 3

Once again the Junior 'Trics got out to an early lead, only for their opponent to come back for the win, as the Twins beat WC 7-3 to advance to the quarter-final. Corey Costello, in his first game in 6 years, had the start for Micksburg; Drew Hathway got the win in relief. Finn Barton started and took the loss and had relief from Gabe Brown. 

East Hants Mastodons 8
Southeastern Ontario Screaming Eagles 1

The Nova Scotia team got second place with the tiebreaker and face the SEO Screaming Eagles, beating them 8-1. Once again, David Watson went the distance, this time in a five-inning run rule shortened game. Hudson Compeau took the loss and had relief from Evan Lyndaker. East Hants advanced to the quarter-final.

Vars Aces 6
Ottawa Valley Grains 5

In the battle of the two top seeds, Vars prevailed 6-5 over the Grainers to advance to the final on Sunday, with OVG going to the semi-finals. The Grainers scored five runs in the first inning but that was all the plated as the Aces came back to win. Andy Barber had the win in relief of Cory Alkerton. Alex Baillargeon took the loss in relief of Adam Rueckwald. Ryan Clare hit a home run for Ottawa Valley.

9 innings

The quarter-final game was an epic rematch of the 2023 Carp Shootout Final as the Micksburg Twins eliminated the Mastodons with a 2-1 win in nine innings. Joran Graham, who got out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth, had the complete game win. David Watson, who threw all 28 innings for Nova Scotia in one day, was the hard luck loser. Scott Conroy's double in the top of the night drove in the winning run.

1 p.m. (Final) - Vars Aces vs winner of semi-final
