Kars defeats Kanata 7-5 - the details

from Chad Milne

Kars hung on to beat Kanata 7-5 in the late game Wednesday night in Manotick. Derrick Bulley started for Kanata, while Brad Porter pitched for Kars.

Porter started strong, fanning five Pirates in the first two innings. The Aces’ offense then went to work in the bottom of the 2nd, scoring five times. Cory Alkerton walked leading off and Kars loaded the bases on consecutive singles by Powers and Pollard. With two out, Knapp laced a bases clearing double to left field. This was followed by a long home run to centre by Nick Ellis.

Kars added to their lead in the 4th when Porter walked leading off and was brought home on a sacrifice fly by Morrison. Following a walk to Milne to put two runners on, Kars looked to finish the game early, but Trevor Lahey, who had earlier replaced Bulley for Kanata, was able to strike out the next Kars’ batter, keeping the score 6-0.

Kanata came to life in the 5th, scoring two runs on some timely hitting and some close calls on the bases. Kanata then held Kars scoreless in the 5th and closed the gap to 6-4, scoring another two runs in the 6th, while leaving the bases loaded.

Kars got a big insurance run in the bottom of the 6th on a home run by Knapp.

In the top of the 7th, leading 7-4 and looking to close out the game, Kars got two quick outs. With the five fans in attendance packing up their lawn chairs, Joe Allan lifted a high fly ball to shallow centre that looked to be the final out of the game, but the Kars centre-fielder overran the ball and had it bounce off his glove, allowing Allan to race around to 3rd. A few more miscues followed, allowing Allan to score and Kanata to put the tying runs on base. Not trusting his fielders, Porter got a big strike out to end the game.

Kristian Knapp was 4 for 4 with 4 RBIs for the Aces, earning the Caveman's Choice as player of the game.
