Florida catches thief in prison softball scam
Thu Mar 23, 09:55 AM EST

MIAMI (Reuters) - A former professional baseball player given a phantom job in a prison library to help the guards win a softball tournament was ordered to repay his $1,400 salary, the Florida attorney general said Wednesday.

Mark Guerra, a former pitcher with a Houston Astros' minor league affiliate, helped a team of prison guards win the Florida Department of Corrections' annual softball tournament last year.

Guerra, 34, was hired as a temporary worker in the library at the Apalachee Correctional Institution but never showed up during the four weeks he was on the payroll, Attorney General Charles Crist said.

Guerra acknowledged the money was for playing in the tournament and pleaded guilty to a theft charge Tuesday. He was ordered to repay the $1,400, perform 50 hours of community service and cooperate in a prison corruption investigation.

"It is disturbing that a state agency would place so much importance on a team sport that it would stoop to committing crimes," Crist said.

From the GHFL page

The Golden Horseshoe Fastball League runs a "discussion forum" at www.ghfl.ca/forum which is an interesting source of news, gossip and rumours.

While it generally focuses on southern Ontario issues, there are occasionally some items of note for this area.

Check out this page for an interesting one rumour (scroll to the bottom): http://www.ghfl.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=233&start=120

Glen Cairn League seeking players

from Eric Rosenquist......

Registration for the 2006 GCMFL season has been completed, but we're still over 20 players short of the 144 that we need. We will also need players to fill spots vacated by players who have to leave due to injury or personal reasons once the season is underway. If you're interested in playing, please download the appropriate form from www.gcmfl.com, fill it out, and fax it to 613-839-6580 (no cover page required).

The Registration Fee is $130.00 - either by cash or cheque, made payable to the "Glen Cairn Men's Fastball League" or simply "GCMFL". The regular season runs from May through August, with playoffs generally wrapping up in mid-September. There's also a mid-season tournament involving all of the teams in late June. All regular season games are played at the A.Y. Jackson diamond. Teams generally play one game a week on Mon/Tues/Wed evenings, although there are occasional games on Thursday nights also.

For more information, call Eric Rosenquist at 613-839-6580 or Charles Durning at 613-270-8851.

Blackburn tournament July 7-9, 2006

Official announcement about the Blackburn tourney this summer:

After hosting a successful ISC II qualifier tournament in 2005, the Blackburn Bombers will again be hosting their annual cash tournament this season. With the ISC II qualifier in Fitzroy Harbour on the weekend we generally run our tournament, we have moved the date to July 7-9 for 2006. The tournament will be held at the same location as previous years, the Arena and Tauvette diamonds in Blackburn. As usual, there will be cold beer and BBQ food at the beer tent at the Arena diamond.

We will be able to accommodate anywhere from 8-16 teams, so we hope to see the same 10 teams from last years qualifier and more. The entry fee will be $325 and there will be a three game guarantee. The prize money and tournament format will be determined once we have a rough idea of the number of teams.

The previous winners for the tournament were the Kemptville Thunder (2004) and Ottawa Team Easton Thunder (2005). For more information about Blackburn, visit
http://www.bmfl.ca/iscIItournament/blackburn.htm

Let me know if you have any questions and feel free to forward this email along to anyone else who may be interested.

GOFL Expands to Six Teams

The Greater Ottawa Fastball League welcomed two new teams to the league last night to bring to a total of six.

Ottawa Blitz will be playing home games out of the Manotick diamonds. The Blitz played last year in the RA league. Scott Dumouchel is the captain of the team. The Blitz also participated in the OASA Men's C tournament last year in Bobcaygeon where they competed well.

I4C Victory is still confirming a home diamond but will likely play in either Carp or Richmond. I4C has entered some tournaments over the last few years, including the Labour Day tournament in Elkland, PA where they have faired well. Neil Cooke will play for and is sponsoring the team, and Shawn Williams will bring his experience from Senior and Intermediate teams in the past in his role as manager.

Pakenham/Antrim Truckstop would be welcomed to the league as a seventh team but they need to find sufficient pitching to confirm their entry into the league.

More details on the schedule, playoffs, etc. on the GOFL webpage to come.
