OASA Masters information

from Dave Birnie

Calling all masters teams in Ontario, especially new teams !

The Ontario Masters "A" & "B" Provincial Championships will take place July 18th. 19th. & 20th. in Niagara Falls Ontario at Ker Park.

The Ontario Amateur Softball Association (OASA) has added a brand new "B" division for this year. This new division was created to allow teams to compete that normally don't attend the Ontario Masters Championship tournament. Some masters players / teams just aren't quite able to compete with the elite level masters teams. The upper level masters teams consist of several players who are still playing at a very high level. There are tons of masters teams in Ontario that no longer attend or refuse to come to the Ontario Masters Championship because as they say "why do I want to bring my team and get embarrassed by an all star team with a bunch of "ringer" players?" These teams now have their own "B" division to play in against other teams of the same caliber.

The new Masters "B" division has strict eligibility rules in place to ensure any "B" division teams will be competing against teams of the same caliber. Click the following link to view these new eligibility rules : http://www.oasa.ca/mensnews.htm

What better way to spend a weekend then by playing fastball in Niagara Falls, why not get a team together for this new Masters "B" division.

Need information ? Don't know where to start ? Don't know how to affiliate with the OASA ? Age & Eligibility rules ? Check out the Ontario Amateur Softball Association web site : http://www.oasa.ca/

Lots of masters fastball information can be found on the Ontario Masters Fastball web site.

"Pugger" and I4C Victory part ways

from Neil Cooke

The I4C Victory Fastball Club has announced some organizational changes that will be in effect for the 2008 Fastball Season. The Club has decided to relieve Shawn 'Pugger' Williams from his duties as the Head Coach of the Victory.

Shawn has been with the organization for the past 2 seasons and we would like to thank Shawn for his contribution and spirit over that time.

In parting Shawn had this to say, "I would have preferred to remain in the role of Head Coach of the Victory, there were some players who wanted the team to have less structure. When told that was the feeling of some of the guys, I agreed that I should step aside and allow someone else to coach and manage the team. I'm still looking at an opportunity to remain involved in the game that does not involve coaching or managing and we'll see where that leads. It's been a fun couple of years and I wish the I4C Victory the best of success. In leaving the team, I would like to acknowledge the support and guidance of Assistant Coach, Eric Rosenquist. He is a true student of the game and someone I could always count on both on and off the field."

The I4C Victory Team wants to thank Shawn for all his hard work and wishes him all the best in the future.

The Upper Valley League is a "go" for 2008

from Shawn Laframboise

The Upper Ottawa Valley Men’s Fastball League had another meeting last night at the Cobden legion. In attendance were representatives from four out of the five teams interested, and it has been confirmed that the newly revived league will host five teams this year.

The Micksburg Twins, Micksburg Junior Twins, Shawville Snappers, Fort – Coulonge, and a Fitzroy / McNab combination will make up the competition.

The league has agreed on a 12 game balanced schedule commencing in the middle of May that would see each team play each other three times. The Fitzroy / McNab squad will be playing three home games in Fitzroy Harbour and three in McNab.

A draft schedule will be created in the coming weeks, and will be finalized at the next meeting. The next league meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday April 21st, at the Cobden Legion.

Smiths Falls Junior B Provincial article

News Release from the Smiths Falls Jr. Redmen

REDMEN AWARDED PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Smiths Falls Madden Hearing Center Junior Redmen Fastball club has been awarded the Ontario Amateur Softball Association’s provincial Junior B Championships. The announcement was made earlier this week by the secretary of the O.A.S.A. Christine Patenaude. In the announcement Patenaude said “ The O.A.S.A. is thrilled to be returning to Smiths Falls this year. The Redmen have played host to many of the top Junior events in the province over the years and it’s nice to be back in Eastern Ontario after a lengthy absence”.

The dates for the event are tentatively scheduled for the weekend of August 22nd, 23rd and 24th. Patenaude explained ‘We have moved the tournament to a later date to allow all Junior players an opportunity to play in the Canadians. In the past players that were picked as replacements for teams going to the Canadians, were forced to make a choice of playing for club teams in the provincials and missing the Canadians”.

Patenaude predicts the competition in Smiths Falls this August will be very good. “Outside of the Junior eliminations in July, this is the best group of Junior teams fans will be able to see in one place this summer”.

Redmen manager Terry Shea is also very excited about the announcement “ We worked hard last summer to lay the ground work for this program, and hosting the provincials this summer certainly will help us recruit players for this year’s team. We felt like we had a pretty good group by the end of season last year. The returning players will improve and we have an excellent group of midget aged players coming along” Shea also said that the team will again compete in the Leeds Men’s Fastball league this season, and plans to attend the Junior Eliminations in Toanche in July.

Anyone under the age of 23 and is interested in trying out for the Redmen is asked to contact Terry Shea at 613-283-5349. Shea said “ we are hoping to start some indoor workouts in the next month, and have full scale outdoor sessions as soon as a majority of the players return from school”.

Doug Roemmele RIP

One of the West Carleton Electric's #1 fans, Doug Roemmele died last night in Fitzroy Harbour. Doug lived just around the corner from the ball diamond in Fitzroy and was a familiar figure at WC Electric games at home and away with his pal Fergie. Doug was often seen offering his "pro tips" to Bud Hanlon, or eating $20 worth of $1 hot dogs at the annual Harbour tournament. Doug leaves his wife Mary and two teenage children. RIP Doug and condolences from the 'Trics.

Ontario ISC Home League Program

If your league is interested in "affiliating" with the ISC for 2008, your league will be granted an entry into the 2008 "Challenge Cup" tournament to be held in Fitzroy Harbour in September. Your league can decide on which team gets the entry (i.e. league playoff champ, regular season leader, or whatever team wants to go!)

Winner of the tourney will get a berth in the 2009 ISC Tournament of Champions. There is no cost to affiliate except for the very reasonable $225 tourney entry fee. Last year's winner was Ottawa Team Easton of the GOFL and they received a berth in the 2008 ISC ToC in Wisconsin.

This is a great way for area leagues to get involved. If you want more information, let me know at fastball[at]fitzroyharbour.com.

Message follows from Blair Setford of the ISC

Ontario Home League Program for 2008

ISC Canada East VP Blair Setford is asking for Ontario men's fastball leagues to confirm their affiliation with the Ontario Home League Program for the 2008 season.

Affiliation enables a league to send a representative to the 2008 Ontario Challenge Cup or the 2008 Eastern Ontario Challenge Cup (details below).

Each tournament will provide the winner with a berth in the 2009 ISC II Tournament of Champions to be held in Quad Cities, IL.

GCMFL Registration - Last Day March 9

from Eric Rosenquist

Last chance registration for the 2008 season of the Glen Cairn Men’s Fastball League will be held at the following date and time:

· Sunday Mar 9, 7-9PM @ Local Heroes Kanata

Local Heroes Kanata is located at 4049 Carling Avenue just east of the Carling Ave / March Rd. intersection.

The $150 fee may be paid in cash or by cheque. Cheques should be made out to “GCMFL” and may NOT be post-dated. Players who wish to register electronically can visit the league web site and download a form from the “Handouts” section, then fill out the form and send the data automatically via e-mail.

At the AGM last fall it was decided that we would take the number of registrants and divide by 12 to arrive at the number of teams. If that means having fewer teams then so be it. Drop by Local Heroes or send your form in to ensure that you get a spot on a team!

Please visit the league web site (www.gcmfl.com) for further details, or email Eric(president{at}gcmfl.com) with any questions.

ISC & ISC II Preseason Reminders for Canada East teams

from Blair Setford

This is just a preseason reminder for all teams that are considering ISC and ISC II play for the 2008 season.

Rosters - Pre-season team rosters (and PRAWN declarations for ISC teams) are due by May 1. The roster form is available from the ISC web site www.iscfastpitch.com. Click on the Rules and Forms link on the front page.

If you’re unable to save the roster form from the web site, let me know and I’ll send you an email attachment of one. The May 1 roster is only preliminary and can be changed during the season. Future roster submissions for teams that qualify for the WT or ToC are due July 15 (for printing in the tournament programs) and August 4 (final roster).

Rosters are to be sent by email attachment to ALL of the following for your appropriate division:

ISC II Tournament of Champions
hdewild@milwpc.com
tschaaf@kimberly.k12.wi.us
jrwilliamson@foodfacility.com
blairjs@rogers.com
rudiereed@aasd.k12.wi.us
jody.lockhart@thedacare.org

Out of Region (Letter of Intent) Forms - If you are signing an OOR player, the OOR form and fee must be postmarked to Ken Hackmeister no later than May 1. The OOR form is also available on the ISC web site under the Rules and Forms link. For ISC teams, it is important to remember, OOR players cannot be added after May 1 without specific approval of the ISC Executive Committee. World Tournament teams are reminded that only 2 OOR pitchers per team may participate in official ISC competition. ISC II teams are reminded of the three (3) player OOR limitations, only two of whom can be pitchers. (Note that ISC II teams may sign a pitcher from the Canada East region between June 23 & July 21.) Region definitions are also shown on the ISC Web Site, Rules and Forms link. For all teams, out of region fees are $100 each for the first three players per team and $300 each for OOR’s beyond three.

Championship Tournaments Preliminary Schedule of Events - With the 2008 World Tournament being only 7 days and the ISC II Tournament of Champions being only 4 days, we have had to alter the times of various functions.

Team Rankings - Pre-season team rankings for both World Tournament and ISC II teams will be distributed in early May. Final rankings determine the seeding for both championship tournaments. We remind teams, as we always do, to fully utilize the Internet to update everyone (including ranking committees) of your team roster, schedule and tournament results during the season. Results should be sent to Al Doran (fastball@pmihrm.com) and Jim Flanagan (jim@fastpitchwest.com). Best of luck on the season and we look forward to seeing you in Kimberly & Appleton in August.
