West Carleton Electric and Stittsville tie at 6

The Stittsville 56ers staged a seventh inning comeback to tie West Carleton Electric 6-6 in Greater Ottawa Fastball League action on Tuesday night in Fitzroy Harbour.

Jeff Barber threw for West Carleton while Darren Featherstone pitched for Stittsville with both chuckers going the distance.

Fitzroy put four runs across in the third to take a lead. With two out, Mike Cavanagh hit his second double of the night. Jeff Cavanagh then reached on an error to put runners on the corners. Steve Cavanagh's single scored Mike, followed by Derek Barber's triple off the monster in right which scored the Cavanagh brothers. D Barber then touched home on Dave Bahm's single.

Stittsville wasn't long responding as they pushed three across in the top of the fourth. With one out, after a walk to Ben Giggliotti, Featherstone reached on a fielder's choice. A single by Dan Bradley and a walk by Trevor Scott loaded the bases. Adam Smith's grounder to short looked like a potential double play to end the inning, but WC only got one out on the play and Featherstone scored. Third baseman Dan Konkle then hit an RBI single that scored Bradley from third and Smith came all the way around from first to score when the throw from the outfield was offline.

The Trics scored a run in the fifth. Steve Cavanagh reached on a passed ball third strike with one out, and was moved to second on Derek Barber's single to left. After a ground out, Neil Murphy's single scored SCav.

WC put up an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to push the score to 6-3. Jeff Barber singled, moved to second on an passed. When the next batter ground out to short, Barber attempted to reach third and throw from first was misplayed allowing him to score.

The 56ers tied it up in the top of the seventh. Konkle reached on misplayed ground ball but was erased at second on Mike Barrett's ground out. Dustin Seymour's infield hit put two men on for lead off hitter John Craig who launched a homer to tie things up at 6. Barber got out of the inning with a strikeout and grounder.

When the Electric were shut down three up three down by Featherstone in the seventh, the game ended tied.

Quyon defeats Kars 8-6 - NOW WITH DETAILS

details from Chad Milne and Moe Laframboise

The Quyon Flyers used home runs to defeat the Kars Aces 8-6 in Tuesday night action in the Greater Ottawa Fastball League on the Quebec side.

Matt Greer had the pitching win for the home team, while Brad Porter took the loss with relief from Luke Severson who came on in the fourth.

In the bottom of the first, Quyon got on the board first. With one out, Shawn Laframboise reached on an error to the pitcher after a full swing bunt and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  After advancing to third on a passed ball he came in to score on Greer’s ground out to shortstop.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the 3rd, Kars struck for a pair of runs. Jordan Shipclark singled leading off and stole second when the next batter struck out. Knapp then walked, but was erased on a fielder’s choice when Ellis grounded one to second base. With two out, Morrison walked to load the bases. Milne then lined what looked like might be the third out of the inning toward second base, but the ball took a weird bounce and eluded the glove of the Quyon second baseman, cashing in both Shipclark and Ellis.

Quyon threatened in the 3rd. With two out, Dennis McCleary doubled to the gap in left. Laframboise’s second ROE of the game advanced McCleary to third however Porter was able to get out of the jam with a strikeout.

The Quyon 4th inning proved to be the difference in this one as they blew the score open, putting up six runs via the long ball.  Joe McCleary and Randy Peck each singled to lead off the inning.  That was followed by a Steve McCord homerun to centre field.  David Hobbs promptly took the very next Porter offering on a frozen rope over the left field fence. Laframboise made the score 7-2 with a two run shot to left centre after Jordan Kearns singled.  That would be the end of the night for Porter as Severson came on in relief.

Now trailing 7-2 in the top of the 5th, Kars again pushed two runs across to get back in the game. Knapp singled to lead off. With one out, Morrison ripped a single to right field that skipped past the right fielder, allowing Knapp to score all the way from first base. With Morrison now at second base, Milne fought off an inside pitch taking it back up the middle for an RBI single. Greer was able to get out of the inning without further damage, getting the next two Kars batters.

Joe McCleary led off the Flyers fifth with a solo homer to right field to add an insurance run.

With the score 8-4 in the top of the 6th, Kars cut the lead in half scoring two runs. Kamps led off with a double just inside the first base line and was brought home when Alex Balswall tripled off the fence in right field. Balswall later scored on a ground out to shortstop by Knapp. Ellis then singled to keep the inning going, but Greer was able to retire the next batter on a fly ball to centre.

Quyon went down in order in the 6th as Severson induced a fly ball out and two strikeouts.

Kars threatened to tie the score in the top of the 7th. Milne walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a one-out single by Pollard. After Kamps grounded out to first, advancing both runners and moving the tying run into scoring position, Greer ended the game by striking out the next Kars batter and preserving the 8-4 win.

Harbour Ball happenings

As frequently documented on this blog, the Fitzroy Harbour Men's Fastball League (affectionately known to all as "Harbour Ball") is a ten team recreational fastball league where weird and wacky stuff happens.

Tonight in Harbour Ball, I witnessed:

- A hard hit ball hit over the head of the right fielder, who scrambled back to the fence to retrieve the ball.....and threw it over to the centre fielder. A new way to hit the cut off I suppose.

- A pitcher who cut his sleeves off his league issued t-shirt (as he does every year).

- A base umpire wearing a sweater and jacket despite it being about 22C at game time.

- A plate umpire who, when after making no indication when a ball hit down the third base line was either fair or foul made the uncommon "I am not sure" call, after which it was determined by consensus of both teams that it was a foul ball.

- A player who patrolled left field in a pair of cowboy boots. Seriously, cowboy boots. Ball cap, league issued shirt, ball pants, belt....and cowboy boots. Solid uni.

Gotta love Harbour Ball.

Quyon Flyers take both in double dip against Kanata Pirates - DETAILS - AND NOW MORE DETAILS

The Quyon Flyers won both games in a Greater Ottawa Fastball League doubleheader in Carp tonight as the faced the Kanata Pirates. We got two versions of the game report for this one!

Quyon 8 Kanata 3
from Shawn Laframboise
In game one of their Thursday night doubleheader in Carp, Quyon handed the ball to Matt Greer while the Pirates countered with Trevor Lahey.

The Flyers got off to a quick start adding 2 in the first inning.  Greer led off the game with a walk and advanced to 2nd on Dennis McCleary's single.  Both runners scored on a Shawn Laframboise single, who advanced to 3rd on Joe McCleary's base hit.  Randy Peck then hit a grounder to 2nd, but with the runners playing in, the fielder was able to check Laframboise at 3rd before taking the out at 1st.  Upon the throw to first, Laframboise attempted to take home but an alert play and good tag by the catcher gave the Pirates their second out of the inning.  Lahey then got out of the inning with a pop out.

The Pirates got one back in the bottom of the first.  Kevin Schonfeld walked and advanced to 3rd on Aaron Amo's single.  Schonfeld scored on Trevor Power's ground out to 2nd base.

Quyon extended the lead to 4-1 in the second inning.  Curtis Daley led off with a double and moved up 60 feet on Jordan Kearns' bunt single.  Both runners scored on David Hobbs' base hit.

The Flyers added one more in the third.  Joe McCleary led off with a bunt single and stole 2nd base. Lahey retired the next two batters before allowing an RBI single to Daley.  In the bottom of the third, Amo was hit by a pitch but was left stranded.

The remaining 4 runs in the game came via the long ball.  Greer hit a solo shot in the fourth.  Kevin Williams hit one deep for Kanata in the sixth.  Joe McCleary and Randy Peck went deep on back-to-back pitches in the seventh to round out the scoring.

Quyon 8 Kanata 2
from Shawn Laframboise
Both clubs decided to stick with the same arms for game two.  The Flyers again got off to a quick start, adding 3 runs in the first inning.  Greer walked and came all the way around to score as Dennis McCleary reached second on a dropped fly ball.  Laframboise put down a sac bunt that was fielded by the catcher.  With D McCleary's good jump at two and quick speed he was able to come around and score when the throw went to first.  Joe McCleary then went deep for the 2nd time of the night to make it 3-0.

In the second inning Quyon added two more runs.  Hobbs reached base with a single and advanced when Ryley Burns reached on an error to the first baseman.  Both runners scored on Greer's base hit.

Kanata got on the score sheet in the bottom of the second.  Ryan Mitts doubled to right field and scored on a Kevin Williams base hit.

Quyon scored two more via the long ball as Burns went deep in the fourth inning and J. McCleary hit his 3rd of the night in the fifth inning.

The Flyers rounded out their scoring in the sixth.  Daley led off reaching safely when the ball was misplayed by the shortstop.  He came all the way around to score on Hobbs' triple.

The Pirates added one more in the bottom half before Greer got out of a bases loaded jam.  With one out, Al Read and Mitts each singled.  Williams struck out for the second out of the inning.  The next batter also struck out for what would have been the last out of the game, however he reached safely on a passed ball.  Schonfeld then drew a bases loaded walk for the Pirates second run of the game.  Greer then got out of the inning with another strikeout.

With it tight for time, the game finished after six so Quyon could make the boat before it closed.

Wednesday night results from Manotick - DETAILS NOW ADDED

There were three Greater Ottawa Fastball League games in Manotick on Wednesday night.

I4C Victory 4 Kanata Pirates 2
Andrew Putnam earned the win while Trevor Lahey took the loss as I4C Victory defeated the Pirates 4-2.

Kars Aces 6 Stittsville 56ers 1
Cory Alkerton earned the win for Kars, while Darren Featherstone took the loss as the Aces won over the 56ers 6-1.

info from Chad Milne
Kars jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st. Knapp was hit by a pitch to start the inning and was brought home by a Nick Ellis double. Cory Morrison followed with single to score Ellis. Featherstone was able to get out of the inning without further damage by striking out the next three batters.

Kars threatened to add to their lead in the 3rd when Kristian Knapp singled and Ellis walked to start the inning, but again Featherstone got the next three batters in order, two by strike out.

Kars finally broke through in the 4th inning, scoring 4 times courtesy of a Kurtis Summers' rbi double and an Ellis' 3-run homer to centre field.

Stittsville broke Alkerton's shut-out bid in the top of the 7th, scoring 1 run.

I4C Victory 3 Kars Aces 1
In the late game, I4C Victory edged Kars 3-1. Neil Cooke had the win and Brad Porter was the losing pitcher in relief of Cory Alkerton.

info from Chad Milne
In the back-end of a double-header for both teams, I4C edged Kars 3-1.

In the top of the 1st with one out, Kevin McGuire tripled to the gap in right-centre and then scored when the relay throw bounced away from the Kars 3rd baseman following a small collision with a sliding McGuire.

Kars evened the score in the bottom of the 2nd. Chad Milne led off with a triple to the gap in left-centre and Danny Powers walked. With one out, Matt Alkerton pushed a bunt to the first base side that was fielded by Cooke, but a hard-charging Milne was able to beat Cooke's throw to the plate.

I4C regained the lead in the 4th when with two out, McGuire stroked a 2-run single to right field.

Kars came close to getting a run back in the 5th. Kurtis Summers reached base on an error and stole second. With two out, Nick Ellis hit what looked like a single to the hole at short, but the I4C shortstop flagged it down and made a strong throw to get the speedy Ellis on a very close play at first base.

Kars came up short again in the 6th when Cory Morrison tripled to lead off the inning, but could not score as Cooke was able to retire the next three batters in order.

In the bottom of the 7th, Summers singled and Kristian Knapp walked with two out. Ellis looked to get Kars back in the game when again he hit a ball to deep short that was fielded by the I4C shortstop who gunned Ellis down at first on an even closer play to end the game.

Kars downs West Carleton 7-3

The Kars Aces beat West Carleton Electric 7-3 in Greater Ottawa Fastball League play on Tuesday night in Fitzroy Harbour.

Brad Porter earned the complete game win, while the home team used a committee of pitchers with Andy Barber, Jeff Barber and Steve Cavanagh all seeing action.

The top of the first saw Kristian Knapp generate a run for Kars. He started off the game with an off hand infield single to third base. Knapp then took second on Nick Ellis' sac bunt, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Cory Morrison's ground out to short.

West Carleton answered back in the bottom of the first. Jon Daley reached on a misplayed grounder and moved to second on a wild pitch. When Michael Cavanagh's grounder resulted in the first baseman being brought off the bag, Daley alertly rounded third and scored.

Kars got back to work in the second as Cory Alkerton walked and scored on Kurtis Summers' two run homer to make it 3-1 for the Aces.

The Aces pushed the lead to 5-1 in the top of the third. Knapp doubled to start things off and took third on a passed ball. After two ground outs, Chad Milne walked. Fitzroy elected to intentionally walk Cory Alkerton. Danny Powers made them pay however as his flare to shallow left-centre scored two Knapp and Milne.

West Carleton scored a run in the fourth as Jeff Cavanagh walked to start the inning moved to third on brother Steve's single and scored on Dave Bahm's RBI single.

Kars made the lead 7-2 in the fifth when Cory Alkerton's two run homer scored Milne (who had previously singled).

West Carleton managed a run in the seventh on a couple of Kars miscues, but the game ended 7-2 for the Aces.

Kristian Knapp earns the Caveman's Choice as player of the game for a good night offensively and a great night defensively for Kars as he made several excellent plays on well hit ground balls.

Quyon beats Stittsville 7-4 - with details

The Quyon Flyers defeated the Stittsville 56ers 7-4 on the Quebec side in Greater Ottawa Fastball League play on Thursday night.

Matt Greer earned the win on the slab while Dan Konkle took the loss.

The Flyers used the long ball as brothers Dennis and Joe McCleary both hit homers, as did Greer to help his cause.

Details from Shawn Laframboise

Quyon 7 Stittsville 4
Stittsville took the boat over to QC Thursday night to face the Flyers.  Matt Greer once again took the mound for the Flyers while the 56ers countered with Dan Konkle.
In the 1st inning Ryan Bond worked a one out walk but Greer induced two fly outs to end the inning.  In the bottom half, Shawn Laframboise reached on an error to the second baseman and advanced to third on Greer’s single.  Greer swiped second uncontested to put two in scoring position for Joe McCleary.  McCleary ripped one over the right field fence to give Quyon an early 3-0 lead.
Stittsville answered back with one in the 2nd.  Ben Gigliotti led off with a base hit to right field, ending up with a triple when the ball got past an outstretched diving Quyon player.  Gigliotti then scored on a Darren Ladouceur single.
Quyon put two more on the board in the bottom half of the frame.  Randy Frobel reached on an error to the pitcher to lead off the inning.  David Hobbs then reached first on a bunt single.  After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, both would score on Dennis McCleary’s single.
The 56ers narrowed the gap to 5-2 in the 3rd.  Scott Jessiman drew a 2-out walk and advanced to 2nd on a passed ball.  Scott Parsons then knocked him in with a base hit.
The score stayed the same until the bottom half of the 4th, where the Flyers added two more via the long ball.  Dennis McCleary ripped a one out offering down the left field line.  Greer also knocked one out to the opposite field with a towering shot down the right field line.
The Flyers seemingly had the game in control, cruising through to the 7th, but Stittsville wouldn’t go away.  With one out in the 7th, Tim Maisonneuve hit a double to the gap in left centre that was just out of reach of the diving centre fielder.  Tyler Nystedt and Bond each hit hard ground balls to the left side of the infield that proved too hot to handle, loading the bases for Jessiman with only one out.  Maisoneuve came in to score when Jessiman was hit by a pitch, making the score 7-3.  Greer walked another batter, putting the tying run on base and narrowing the gap to 3 runs.  A ground ball to third base enabled the Flyers to get the lead runner at the plate for the second out of the inning before Greer induced a fly ball to end the game, securing the victory for the home side.
Caveman’s choice player of the game goes to Greer for pitching the complete game and going 2/4 at the dish with a homerun.

Quyon Flyers 2 I4C Victory 1
info from Shawn Laframboise

The Flyers were in Manotick for a double header Wednesday night vs I4C Victory and the Kars Aces.  Matt Greer got the start for Quyon while I4C countered with Andrew Putnam.  Both pitchers went the distance for their respective clubs.

In the top of the 1st, Dennis McCleary led off with a walk.  After a strikeout, Greer walked to put two on and one out.  Putnam got out of the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.

I4C started the scoring in the bottom of the 1st.  With one out, Matt McNish singled to left field and advanced to 3rd on Shawn Simzer’s base hit to right field.  He came in to score on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.  Greer escaped the inning with a strikeout and a groundout.

Quyon got their first hit of the night in the 2nd inning with a two-out single from Jordan Kearns.  He was left stranded however and Putnam had 5 k’s through two innings.  In the bottom half of the frame Greer retired the I4C batters in order.

The score remained the same until the top of the 6th.  Shawn Laframboise led off with a single and advanced to 2nd on a passed ball.  After another walk to Greer, both runners advanced 60 feet on another passed ball.  Joe McCleary then ripped a 2 RBI single to centre field to give Quyon the lead.

I4C threatened in the 7th.  Adam Fleming led off with a base hit.  Fleming advanced to second on Ty McNish’s sac bunt.  After a strikeout, Kevin McGuire and Matt McNish each drew walks to load the bases.  Greer was able to get out of the jam with another K to end the game.

Joe McCleary gets the Caveman’s choice player of the game with his clutch hit in the 6th inning.

The second game of the Manotick doubleheader saw Brad Porter earn the win and Matt Greer take the loss with relief from Earl Kearns.

Dennis McCleary led off the game with a single up the middle and took 2nd base when the centre fielder was slow to get to the ball.  Shawn Laframboise walked.  After a strikeout, both runners advanced on a wild pitch.  Porter struck the next batter out bringing Randy Peck to the plate.  McCleary would then score on a passed ball after leaping over the catcher’s tag.

Greer started strong fanning the first two Kars’ batters. Back-to-back singles by Morrison and Milne were left stranded when Greer got the next batter on another strike out.

Quyon added another in the top of the 2nd.  Steve McCord walked and advanced to second on an Earl Kearns sacrifice bunt.  He would then score on a one out single from David Hobbs.

Kars had a big second inning. Danny Powers singled to lead off and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ian King. Jordan Shipclark then singled to bring Powers home with Kars’ first run. Porter followed with an rbi single and then Kristian Knapp singled. With two out, Cory Morrison singled to bring home both runners. Greer struck out the next batter to end the inning with Kars leading 4-2.

The Flyers answered back with two in the 3rd.  Laframboise led off with a solo homerun to left field.  Greer walked and advanced to third on a Joe McCleary single.  Greer would then come in to score on an RBI single from McCord.

Kars could not respond, leaving Power stranded after a one out double, to keep it at 4-4.

Then in the fourth, with one out, the top four batters in Kars order reached base on three singles and a walk, scoring once and chasing Greer from the game. Earl Kearns came into pitch. M. Alkerton brought home a run with a sacrifice fly. Kearns got the next batter to end the inning and Kars lead 6-4.

Kars invoked the run rule in the fifth. King singled to lead off and Porter reached base on a fielder’s choice. Knapp then singled to drive in one run. With the bases loaded and one out, following an Ellis single, Morrison drilled the first pitch he saw deep over the centre field fence for a game-ending grand slam. Kars wins 11-4.

Big night for Smitty: Kanata wins both in doubleheader, over Micksburg 4-2 and Kars 2-1 NOW WITH DETAILS

The Kanata Pirates won both games in their doubleheader in Carp in Greater Ottawa Fastball League play on Thursday night and got fourteen innings out of veteran chucker Jason Smith.

In the first game they came away with a 4-2 win over Micksburg Twins. Smith earned the win while Corey Costello took the loss.

Kanata 4 Micksburg 2
details from Ivan Taylor

As expected, it was a well pitched game last night in Carp with the Kanata Pirates defeating the Micksburg Twins 4-2.  Jason Smith for the Pirates and Corey Costello for the Twins both pitched complete games.

In the first inning, Corey Costello drew a two-out walk for the Twins but was left on base and the Pirates went three up and three down.  In the second inning, the Twins started in the inning when Kevin Humphries walked but then Jason Smith struck out the next three batters.  The Pirates had something going when the first two batters in the bottom of the inning, Trevor Power and Duane Bromley, reached base on errors.  However, Corey Costello closed the door with three straight strikeouts.

The Twins scored first in the top of the third inning.  Mike Moss drew a walk and then was driven around the bases by Kyle Jackson's double.  Mike Moss scored on Jamie Mick's ground out to second base.  Corey Costello struck out the side in the bottom of the inning.

Both teams went three up and down in the fourth.  Micksburg went three up and down in the top of the fifth inning before the Pirates broke the game open in the bottom of the inning.  After two strike outs, the Pirates hit four consecutive singles.  Al Read started the rally and advanced to second on a passed ball.  Jordan Adams knocked in Al Read.  Kevin Shonfield followed with a single.  Then Joe Allan hit a ball that got past the right fielder and went to the fence.  Jordan Adams and Kevin Shonfield scored and Joe Allan ended up on third base.  Joe Allan then scored on a passed ball to make the score 4-1 for the Pirates.

The Twins closed the gap with a lead off solo home run by Jamey Mick in the top of the sixth inning.  Then Corey Costello followed with his second walk of the game.  However, Kevin Shonfield ended the rally with a neat double play.

Trevor Power led off the top of the sixth for the Pirates with a walk but the Pirates couldn't knock him in.  Then Jason Smith got the Twins to go three up and down in the top of the seventh to seal the win for the Pirates 4-2.

The Caveman player of the game was Jason Smith who allowed just two runs on two hits and struck out 10.  (It should be noted that Jason Smith followed this game with another complete game win 2-1 over the Kars Aces in the nightcap.)  Corey Costello had an exceptional performance for the Twins allowing only 2 earned runs and striking out 13.

For the second game, Kanata prevailed 2-1 over the Kars Aces. Smith again earned the victory, while Luke Severson took the loss. Lindsay Medynski homered for Kanata. Kars were limited to three hits while Kanata had four.

Kanata 2 Kars 1
details from Chad Milne

Kanata faced Kars in the back-end of their doubleheader on Thursday night in Carp. Jason Smith started for Kanata, while Luke Severson pitched for Kars.

There wasn’t much scoring in this one. Kanata got on the board first in the top of the 2nd courtesy of a Lindsay Medynski homerun to right-centre. Kars threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the 4th, when Morrison and Milne each singled with one out, but Smith was able to get out of the inning inducing a pop-up to second and getting a strike out.

In the bottom of the 5th Kars finally broke through to tie the game. With one out, newcomer Alex Balswall walked and was brought home on a two-out double to left field by Knapp. But Kanata came right back in the top of the 6th to retake the lead. Joe Allen reached base when he squibbed a ball off the end of the bat that Severson fielded but didn’t have time to get the speedy Allen. John Ferguson followed with a double off the left-centre field fence to score Allen. Then Smith set down the Kars’ batters in order in the 6th and 7th to preserve the 2-1 win for Kanata.
