With the result from the make up games on Wednesday, the final positions in the Greater Ottawa Fastball League standings are now set. Playoffs start after Labour Day, with exact dates and times to be determined. Watch the blog for details as they finalized.

1. Quyon Flyers 12-3-4 = 26 pts
2. Kars Aces 10-5-4 = 24 pts
3. West Carleton Electric 10-6-3 = 23 pts

Quyon Flyers earn the bye to the final four. Quyon has never won the league playoff title, but were finalists for four consecutive years from 2009 to 2012.

The match ups for the best-of-three first round are as follows:

Kars Aces vs Stittsville 56ers
These two teams matched up in the regular season, with Kars winning two games 4-1 and 5-3 and Stittsville winning one game 5-4. The Aces franchise has won the playoff title eight times, with the last one in 2012, which was the third of three in a row. The 56ers last playoff titles were back in 2008 and 2009.

West Carleton Electric vs Micksburg Twins
This a re-match of last year's finals. In the regular season, every game was shortened by the run rule - two in favour of Micksburg (11-1 and 7-0) and one for WC (15-0). Micksburg are defending playoff champions and have won the title twice. West Carleton has been in the finals three times but never won the title.

I4C Victory vs Ottawa Valley As
The regular season games between these two teams were all close. I4C won 8-5 early in the year, then Valley took the next two match ups 8-7 and 4-3. I4C won the playoff crown in 2014 and 2015. This is Valley's fourth season in the GOFL and they have yet to make the finals.

GOFL standings - updated again

After Thursday's game, the playoff picture in the Greater Ottawa Fastball League is more clearer again.

1. Quyon 12-3-4 = 28 pts
2. West Carleton 10-6-3= 23 pts
3. Kars 8-5-3= 19 pts (3 games left)
4. I4C Victory 6-9-3 = 15 pts (1 game left)
5. Valley 7-11-0 = 14 pts (1 game left)
6. Micksburg 6-11-2 = 14 pts
7. Stittsville 5-11-3= 13 pts
Quyon Flyers: The Flyers have locked up first place. They earn the bye to the double-knockout round.

West Carleton Electric: The Trics don't have any games remaining and their final placement depends on how Kars finishes up the season. WC will finish either second or third. If Kars and WC finish with identical records, the Electric hold the tiebreaker based on their season series.

Kars Aces: The final placement for the Aces is in their hands. If they win their remaining three games (or two wins and a tie) they finish second. Otherwise, they finish third. Their remaining games are against the affiliate team from Kemptville as well as I4C and Valley.

I4C Victory & Ottawa Valley As: Victory and Valley will finish fourth or fifth - but the order is to be determined. A win in their final game against Kars would secure I4C fourth. A win by Valley in their final game against Kars and a loss by I4C would get Valley the four spot. No matter what they play each other in the first round - home team advantage is what is at stake.

Micksburg Twins: With the loss in their final regular season game, the Twins finish sixth and will play the Aces or the Electric, depending on who finishes third.

Stittsvillle 56ers: Stittsville doesn't have any games remaining and will stay in seventh place and will play the Aces or the Electric, depending on who finishes second.

Caveman at the ISC Worlds

Sunday and Monday, the Caveman and I were in southern Ontario so we took the opportunity to drop in to watch some of the International Softball Congress World Tournament in Kitchener.

It was great ball to watch, and lots of fun to run into former teammates and opponents from across North America.

On Monday afternoon, we were watching a game featuring the Rio Grande Senators from Texas on the main diamond. The Caveman says to me "This guy pitched for Mexico when we went to the PanAm Games."

I'm sceptical, "How do you know that?"

"I remember him", he says. "He's gained some weight but I remember the way he pitches and makes that noise."

I look him up online. Sure enough, he is correct it's Samuel Villalvazo, who threw at the PanAms in Toronto in 2015. Three years ago (when he was ten) he saw the guy throw at one event, and he recognizes and identifies him at the Worlds.

The As responded with 13 runs over the next four innings to win the game. Adam Rueckwald was the winning pitcher. Matt McIntyre took the loss and had relief from Brendan Hennessy.

West Carleton Electric 6 Ottawa Valley As 0

The second game saw the West Carleton Electric prevail 6-0 over Ottawa Valley. Andy Barber had the shutout win, allowing only four hits. Ben Broek took the loss.

WC scored in the top of the first. Barber singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Trevor Barton, and scored on Chris Costello's two out single.

The Electric added a run in the second. Mitch Taylor was hit by a pitch but put out on a fielder's choice that saw Neil Murphy reach first. Dave Bahm, back from almost two year hiatus from the 'Trics, then singled. After a strike out, Barber walked to load the bases. Trevor Barton singled to drive in Murphy.

The visitors put up three in the fourth inning. Bahm was hit by a pitch, and Alex Boucaud singled. Barber then bunted for a single to load the bases. Barton hit a blooper over second base that couldn't be caught, but as Barber was put out, Bahm scored. Boucaud scored from third on a wild pitch, and Barton scored later on a Costello single.

The final run for West Carleton was in the sixth. Mike Cavanagh reached on an error with one out. Costello's double moved M Cav to third, and he scored on Jeff Cavanagh's ground out to shortstop.

Bancroft tournament results

This past weekend, the Bancroft Men's Fastball League hosted a five team tournament at the diamond in Fort Stewart. Teams participating were three from the Bancroft league, one made up of players from the Fitzroy league, brought to you by Murphy's Plumbing (including me) and one composed of players from the Glen Cairn league.

Now, personally, I like to pride myself in having visited many small towns in this part of Ontario for fastball or hockey. However, Fort Stewart was a new place for me - in fact I can't say I'd ever heard of it previously.

In any event, the field was good, despite not having any lights, and the level of play was pretty decent. The tournament was "BYOB" and teams certainly took advantage of that.

I was perhaps most impressed with the one guy from the Bancroft Red team who used a mop bucket as a ball bag (true story, see below).

All teams played in each other in a round robin on Saturday and early Sunday, with the top two advancing to the final on Sunday afternoon. Some of the pitchers in attendance were Matt Leahy, Abe Leahy, Adam Reueckwald and Will Lowe.

The Maroon team from Bancroft, Fitzroy and the Glen team were all tied with 3-1 records. Based on plus/minus, the Fitzroy team was eliminated. Bancroft defeated the Glen 8-0 in the final.

Bytown Belles Finish Third at PWSA Women’s Open Championships

By Erin Durant

The Bytown Belles finished third this past weekend at the Provincial Women’s Softball Association Women’s Open tournament. The Bytown Belles is made up of a veteran squad of former university athletes. The Belles were joined this season by some much-needed youth with the addition of eighteen year old pitcher Olivia Elliott who is entering her second year at St. Clair College. Elliott would prove to be a key addition to the Belles in the absence of pitcher Jean Cardona who was unavailable for the tournament.

The Belles finished the round robin last in Pool B, losing blow out games to both Toronto Fastpitch and Kars Senior (comprised of athletes from the defending National Championship winning Whitby Eagles team). Ottawa umpires will be surprised to hear that Belles outfielder Erin Durant made her PWSA pitching debut against Kars in an effort to save Elliott and veteran pitcher Elissa Sivel for a long day of back-to-back games on Sunday.

The Belles turned things around brilliantly on Sunday. Sivel and Elliott both pitched in an 11-6 win over Enniskillen (the top seed in Pool A) with Sivel getting the win and with offensive contributions from everyone in the lineup. The Belles then knocked off a very strong Mississauga team (the second seed in Pool B) 10-2 which featured a three run inside the park homerun by Amy Olivier (alumni and coach of Laurier University Softball). Sivel started the game and left after attempting to battle through being hit on her pitching arm with a line drive. Elliott finished the game, also battling an injury. The win over Mississauga guaranteed the Belles third place.

The Belles then faced Toronto Fastpitch and Canada Elite Team pitcher Sierra Bertrand who effectively shut down the Belles offence. Elliott started the game for the Belles and lasted a strong 4 innings before leaving the game due to injury. With no pitchers remaining, Durant would finish the game (earning her first, and hopefully last, career strikeout). The Belles would lose the game 9-1 in six innings.

Toronto Fastpitch went on to defeat Kars Senior 5-4 after 8 innings in the gold medal game. Kars will be the only Ontario team attending the upcoming Canadian Championships in Saskatoon.

Two Belles players received individual awards for their statistics during the playoff round. Stephanie Manson (Former University of Windsor athlete and current Laurier Softball Coach and OIWFA Vice-President) received the top batter award for appearing in all three playoff games, with 10 plate appearances and a batting average of .750 (along with 2 RBIs, 3 runs scored, a walk and a sacrifice bunt). Elliott received top pitching honours after appearing in all three playoff games on Sunday (13 innings), striking out 8 and achieving an ERA of 3.75.

The Belles were coached by Scott Searle, Matt Allen, Kevin Fagg and Shawn Trudeau. We would like to thank the coaches for their time and energy this season – especially Shawn who clearly had no idea what he was getting himself into!
