I4C Victory repeat as GOFL playoff champions - WITH MORE DETAILS

I4C Victory repeated as Greater Ottawa Fastball League playoff champions, taking the best of three final two games to none on Tuesday night in Manotick with a 1-0 win in eight innings over the Micksburg Twins.

Andrew Putnam got the win allowing only three hits and striking out an impressive 22 batters. Corey Costello took the loss even though he threw a one-hitter. He struck out 19.

Quinton Rook and Jamey Mick had singles for the Twins, while Chad Costello had a double. The only I4C hit was a Ryan Mitts' double.

The game was scoreless after seven complete and went to the "international runner" on second base in the eighth. Micksburg got the bases loaded in top of the first extra inning but couldn't score. I4C got the win when a two-out fly ball by Ryan Clare was misplayed in the outfield, allowing the runner (Don Cox) on second to score.

The win allowed I4C Victory to repeat as GOFL playoff champions for the second straight year.

Caveman's perfect recall

It's now hockey time for the Caveman, and the teams have been selected. He has been assigned to a team in the Atom (U10) house league.

At his first practice, his hockey coach said to me something along the lines of “Jeez, I was impressed when I saw your son this spring. Caveman can sure throw a softball - I don’t know if I could hit his pitches!”

Caveman was of course pleased to hear this. I asked him afterward: "Do you remember playing against Coach's son in softball this year?" (I must have missed the game coaching Fitzroy Junior's team because I don’t remember seeing him play this kid.)

Caveman: “Oh yeah Dad, I remember. Struck him out on five pitches.”

Me: “C’mon, as if you remember how many pitches!”

Caveman: “It’s true. Strike, strike, ball, ball, strike three. You don’t have to believe me but that’s what I did.”

So, either the Caveman has a photographic memory for softball, has a great imagination or is completely insane....or all three.

I4C Victory wins game one of the GOFL finals

I4C Victory opened up the Greater Ottawa Fastball League playoff final series with a 6-2 win in Micksburg on Thursday night.

A good crowd was on hand on a chilly evening as Andrew Putnam threw a one-hitter and struck out 16 for the win. Joran Graham took the loss for the Twins, striking out 13.

After a scoreless first inning, I4C scored two in the second. Ryan Mitts reached based on a misplayed fly ball and scored on Curt Scurr's two run homer to left-centre field.

Victory added another two in the third inning. With one out, Kevin McGuire hit a single that went by the outfielder, resulting in a three base error and allowing him to score. Joe Allan then singled, stole second and scored on Mitts' RBI single to make it 4-0 for I4C.

There were two more runs for I4C Victory in the fifth as McGuire walked, stole second and scored on Putnam's RBI single. After a single by Ryan Clare and a walk to Scurr, the bases were loaded for Adam Fleming who also walked to bring in another run to make it 6-0 for the visitors.

Micksburg got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Graham walked and was brought in on a large home run by Corey Costello - which turned out to be the Twins only hit of the game.

Game two of the series is "under negotiations" and will be published on the Blog once finalized.
