Easton defeats Orleans 7-1

from Cory Morrison

Easton playing their 4th game in 4 nights came away with a 7-1 win over the Orleans Gators. Easton opened the scoring in the top of the 1st as Dave Tubman walked and was sacrificed to second by Pat O'Connor, Todd Fraser followed that up with a single to score Tubman then Randy Peck launched a 2-Run shot deep over the right center field fence to put Easton up 3-0 with 1 out. Cory Morrison followed the home run with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Dan Konkle then singled to score Morrison. Lukas Kamps singled and Scott Marion walked to load the bases but the Orleans pitcher Nick Bowman was able to get Kyle Olson to hit into a force play erasing Konkle at home plate then Dave Tubman who led the inning off, grounded out to second base.

Easton added to their lead in the 2nd by virtue of another homerun off the bat of Randy Peck.

Up 5-0 heading into the 4th Easton would add another as Tubman singled with 1 out and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Pat O'connor then singled to drive in Tubman. Scott Searle (playing his first game in 8 years and sporting a some swankly new ball pants) stepped to the plate and ripped a single to center to put runners on 1st and 2nd however Cory Akerton who replaced the Orleans starter was able to get Randy Peck to hit into a fielder's choice and then struck out Cory Morrison to end the inning.

Orleans got on the board in the bottom half of the 5th with a single run off Kyle Olson who replaced Dan Konkle after three innings.

Easton rounded out he scoring in their half of the 5th on an Rbi triple by Kyle Olson that scored Scott Marion who had reached base on a fielder's choice. Olson was able to shut the door in the bottom half of the inning and Orleans submitted to the mercy rule.

Easton Batters:
Randy Peck 2/3 2HR's 3Rbi's 2 runs scored
Scott Searle 1/1 (1st ever hit in fastpitch league play)
Dan Konkle 1/2 Rbi

Konkle strikes out 20 - and loses to Manotick

from Tony Riches

Manotick used some timely hitting to ruin a stellar pitching performance by Easton`s Dan Konkle. The ace pitcher managed to strike out 20 batters but still ended up on the wrong end of a 4-3 score.

Manotick opened the scoring in the second inning with a Rich Antunes RBI single. Easton took advantage of a wild spell by Manotick starter Shannon Borho to take a 2-1 lead in their half of the inning. Randy Peck led off with a walk and, a few screen gems later, found himself at third. Cory Morrison singled home Peck and he too circled the bases one pitch at a time, eventually scoring on a wild one. Pat O`Connor tripled home Morrison in the fourth inning to stretch the lead to 3-1 before Borho settled into a groove for the remainder of the game. Manotick`s big inning was the fifth where they used 5 singles, including a 2-strike bunt single by Calvin Medynski, a 2 RBI knock by Mike Branchaud and an RBI hit by John Lindsey, to take a 4-3 lead. Borho made that lead stand up, stranding runners at second and third in the bottom of the seventh for the victory.

For Manotick;
Branchaud 2-4, 2RBI

Manotick widened the lead to 5-1 on RBI singles by Bickell and Don Cox in the bottom of the fourth inning. Neil Cooke replaced Trevor Wood on the mound for I4C and managed to escape a bases loaded jam to stop the rally. Trevor Lahey had a strong outing going into the sixth but a leadoff triple by Gourgon ignited the big comeback for I4C. Consecutive hits by Matt McNish, Brooks Paziuk, Wood and Eric Colvin knotted the game at 5.

Both teams left runners in scoring position in the seventh but the game ended in a tie.

Carp Mounts Sixth Inning Comeback to Tie Manotick Lomor Printers

Carp Mounts Sixth Inning Comeback to Tie Manotick Lomor Printers
Victory Now Undefeated in Four Games
from Shawn Williams

Lots of errors and not a lot of hitting had the Carp I4C Victory behind the eight ball early last night but a late sixth inning rally allowed the team to pull out a 5-5 tie with the Manotick Lomor Printers in Greater Ottawa Fastball League (GOFL) action in Manotick on Wednesday night.

Manotick opened things up in the second when Mike Branchaud doubled. It was one of three hits on the night for the veteran first baseman/designated player. John Lindsey then singled to put runners on the corners. Lindsey then moved to second base on a fielder’s choice. After Joe Allan reached first to load the bases, Rich Antunes hit a shallow fly to centrefield that a hard charging Matt McNish could not reach allowing two runs to score. With Allan now on third, the throw to the infield was cut off and in an attempt to get Allan at third, the ball deflected off of the glove of third baseman Eric Colvin allowing Allan to score and make the score 3-0 after one. Carp got one of those runs back in the top of the third. With one out, Pete Pettit hit a long drive to the fence in centrefield for a double. Al Read then reached on an error allowing Petitt to score from second.

In the bottom of the fourth, Manotick added two more when Allan led off with a walk and moved to second on an Antunes single. A fake bunt steal by the Printers had a throw to third that was not handled by Carp shortstop, Kyle Gourgon who was covering on the play and as the ball went into left field, Allan scored and Antunes was safe at second. Trevor Lahey who had the start for Manotick, laid down a sacrifice moving Antunes to third who then scored on an Adam Bickell single and the score was now 5-1. After Don Cox singled, Carp Head Coach and General Manager, Shawn Williams made a pitching change bringing in Neil Cooke to replace Carp starter, Trevor Wood. After walking Calvin Mydenski, Cooke enticed Branchaud, who re-entered the game after Rob Soubliere pinch ran for him in the third inning, to ground into a 4-2 fielder’s choice before striking out Lindsey to end the inning.

The Carp bats finally came alive in the top of the sixth after Lahey had kept them quiet for most of the night. Gourgon led off with a triple to left field that got over the head of Allan. After Read popped out to second, McNish hit a hard infield single to Lindsay Medynski and head’s up base running by Gourgon had him quickly back to third allowing McNish to safely reach first. Brooks Paziuk then hit an RBI single to score Gourgon with McNish moving to third. An RBI single off the bat of Wood who was now batting for Cooke made the score 5-3. Colvin cashed those two in with a 2 RBI single that tied the score at five. Carp made some noise in the top of the seventh when with one out, Gourgon had an infield single and advanced to second on an overthrow into the Carp bench. After Read flew out to right, McNish drew an intentional walk and clean up hitter Paziuk struck out to end the threat.

Manotick also mounted a late charge when with one out, Branchaud singled and was replaced for the second time by pinch runner, Shannon Borho. After Lindsey struck out and with Lindsay Medynski at the plate, Borho took second when an errant throw back to the pitcher’s circle got away and went into centre field. However Cooke was able to end the game on a 6-3 ground out and the game ended in a 5-5 tie.

Offensively for Carp, Gourgon was 2-4 with a run scored, Colvin was 2-3 with two RBIs and Pettit was 1-3 with a run scored. They left five on base.

For Manotick, Branchaud was 3-4 with a run scored while Allan was 0-1 with two walks, two runs scored and a stolen base. Manotick stranded seven runners on the night.

On the mound for Carp, Wood (3-1) started and went 3 1/3 innings giving up five runs, four unearned, on six hits, he walked two and struck out two. He had no decision. Cooke (5-1-2) got the tie in relief. He threw 3 2/3 innings giving up no runs on one hit, he walked one and struck out three. Carp made five errors.

Lahey threw all seven innings for Manotick. He gave up five runs, one unearned on nine hits, gave up an intentional walk and struck out seven, four of them looking. Manotick made two errors.

Carp’s next scheduled game is next Wednesday, August 1st in Stittsville against the 56ers. This is a make-up game that was originally to be played on May 16th and then was re-scheduled to July 26th in Carp. It has subsequently been re-scheduled a second time to the new date. He team still has to make-up a game against Ottawa Team Easton Thunder that was scheduled for July 4th. That make-up date has not yet been determined.

Easton prevails 4-2 over WC Electric in Pakenham

Team Easton won by a score of 4-2 over WC Electric in GOFL play in Pakenham on Monday night. A walk off two-run homer by Todd Fraser in the bottom of the seventh was the difference.

A nice crowd gathered in Pakenham on a beautiful night to see local "lad" Jim Ryan of WC Electric face Team Easton's ace Dan Konkle.

WC Electric scored in the top of the first. Trevor Barton hit a one-out single, and moved to second on a wild pitch. Michael Cavanagh struck out, but reached base as the ball eluded the catcher. When the throw went into right field, Barton scored the first run of the game. Troy Wilson then reached on an error, and subsequently stole second, but Konkle pitched out of the jam.

Easton responded in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1. Dave Tubman walked to lead off . After Kevin Chevrier flew out, Tubman subsequently moved to second a long fly ball hit by Todd Fraser to left field. Randy Peck the delivered a clutch single to score Tubman. After Cory Morrison walked to put men on first and second, John Peck drove what looked like a single up the middle. However, a diving catch by Michael Cavanagh at shortstop and subsequent tag at second base ended the inning, on a spectacular defensive play that drew applause from the gathered locals.

Easton took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third. Chevrier hit a single and was brought in by yet another clutch two out hit by Randy Peck. Peck drove a double to the gap, scoring Chevy, and moving to third on the throw to the plate.

In the top of the fifth, the 'Trics responded to tie the game at 2. Jason Armstrong slapped a one-out triple to left. After Konkle struck out the next batter, Jon Daley delivered a key single to score Armstrong and even the match.

However, Todd Fraser ruined the show for Pakenham's favourite pitcher in the bottom of the seventh. Tubman led off the seventh with his second walk of the game. After Chevier dropped a sac bunt to move Tubby to second, Fraser drove a line shot to left centre to win the game for Team Easton by a score of 4-2.

Dan Konkle had the win, throwing 7 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned), 3 hits, walking 1 and striking out 13.

Jim Ryan took the loss, throwing very well over 6.1 innings, allowing 4 runs (all earned) on 6 hits, walking 5 and striking out 9.

Hitters - Easton:

Dave Tubman 0-2, 2BB, 2R

Chad Hargrove out for the season

Some of you may have heard that Chad Hargrove of the Orleans Gators (and tourneys with the Carp I4C Victory) is out for the season. Chad has mononucleosis and some side effects that have the doctors telling him no more ball for 2007

Here is the word from Chad himself on what happened:

It isn't necesarily the mono that's keeping me from playing, aside from a bit of tiredness the mono has had little effect on me. It's the fact that the mono caused an enlargement in my spleen and it ruptured during the Stittsville game.

Waking up with severe abdominal pains over night I went to the clinic in Orleans in the morning where the diagnosis was made, and I was quickly sent to the General Hospital where I stayed for 6 nights. Now that my spleen is still about 2-3 times its normal size it will be far to fragile to play with for the remainder of the season.

My season is over as it will take approx 2-3 months for my spleen to recover, I will be heading back to the General for an Ultrasound in 4-5 weeks. Long term effects from this injury are not expected.

A huge disappointment for Chad I'm sure to miss the ISCs - but he's young and has plenty of ball ahead of him. Best wishes from fitzroyfastball on a speedy recovery.

WC Electric comes back to defeat Easton 4-3

WC Electric came back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Team Easton 4-3 on a Todd Clouthier RBI single in the bottom of the seventh in GOFL play in Fitzroy Harbour on Friday night. Both teams had depleted line ups, with only nine regulars and Easton even recruited a "retiree" to round out their line up.

Kyle Olson took the loss for Easton, pitching well in relieving Dan Konkle who lasted three pitches on the night. Brad Porter had the complete game win for WC Electric.

Team Easton scored their only three runs of the night all in the first inning. John Peck started things off with a one out single that deflected off of Porter's glove. Todd Fraser then ripped a single to left field, putting men on first and second for clean up hitter Randy Peck. R.P. then hit a home run to centre field, putting Easton up 3-0. Pat O'Connor also had a single in the inning, but Porter had two strike outs to end the threat.

In the bottom of the first, Dan Konkle lasted only three pitches before removing himself from the game due to injury. Kyle Olson came in to pitch for Easton.

As Easton only had nine regulars and Konkle was hurt, captain Randy Peck reached into the stands to find a ninth player. Former WC Electric player Mark Wright, who had retired after the 2006 season, was at the park in Fitzroy to watch the game with his wife Stephanie and two children. With the injury to Konkle, Wrighty was pressed into service and played left field for the visitors - in his jeans.

WC Electric scored to make it 3-1 in the second. Shawn Rebertz hit a one out single and stole second. Todd Clouthier then walked. Steve Cavanagh then hit an RBI single. Olson retired the next two batters.

The home team scored another run in the third to make it 3-2. Jon Daley led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch, but was picked off by catcher Todd Fraser taking too big a lead at second. Michael Cavanagh later in the inning hit a two out triple to spark the 'Trics. Cavanagh was then brought in by an RBI single by Troy Wilson. Shawn Rebertz then hit a single to left, but Wilson was thrown out trying to take third by former teammate Wright, to end the inning.

WC Electric threatened in the fourth, after singles by Steve Cavanagh and Adam Brown, but Olson closed the door with two strike outs to end the inning.

Porter was pitching strongly for the home side, retiring the side in order in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings.

WC Electric evened the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Michael Cavanagh hit a double with one out, and reached third on a wild pitch. Troy Wilson then grounded out, but earned his second RBI of the evening.

Team Easton threathened in the top of the sixth when Randy Peck drew a two-out walk, and Mark Wright singled. However, Porter got O'Connor to ground out to end the inning.

After a scoreless bottom of the sixth and top of the seventh, the game was still tied at three.

Jon Daley led off the bottom of the seventh for the 'Trics with a solid single. Beef Johnson then dropped a sac bunt to move Daley to second. Easton attempted to get the out at second, but an errant throw resulted in men on the corners with none out. Easton then elected to intentially walk Michael Cavanagh to load the bases, bringing up clean up hitter Troy Wilson. The strategy seemed to work, as Wilson hit into a 3-2-3 double play. Easton then elected to intentionally walk Shawn Rebertz to load the bases and set up the force play. With the bases loaded, two out, and a tied game in the bottom of the seventh, Todd Clouthier came to the plate for the home team. Clouthier hit a walk off single to drive in the game winning run, and send the fans home happy as the 'Trics won 4-3.

Brad Porter had the win, allowing five hits in seven innings of work, with three earned runs. Porter walked two and struck out ten.

Kyle Olson had the loss in relief of Dan Konkle. Konkle threw only three pitches, as Olson entered the game during the first WC Electric at bat. Olson allowed four earned runs on twelve hits, allowed three walks (two intentional) and struck out six.

Quyon adds veterans for the ToC

from Joe McCleary

The Quyon Flyers would like to announce the signings of 3 veteran players to accompany the team to this year's Tournament of Champions in Kitchener. The 3 additions bring the team's average age from 21.5 years to almost 27 years!

Earl Kearns, from Quyon, QC, will make the trek with the club, adding a clutch stick, solid "D", wheels like a deer and a tongue that is never snake bit for words!

Also joining the club is Gordie "Frosty Top" Flannery, the veteran southpaw hurler, from Kazabazua, QC, with an unmistakable laugh that can be identified from anywhere at a ball park.

Rounding out the additions is our secret weapon, out of retirement from Micksburg, ON, the hatless, belt less wonder Lenny Burger. Lenny brings his hard throwing left arm to the club along with his devastating change up (changement de vitesse, for those of you that speak French). We are currently in negotiations with Lenny to suck it up and wear a hat and belt for the tournament. We are also looking into the ISC to see if they can revoke the pitching rule while Lenny is on the rubber, so we can all watch the toe tap in the heat of battle.

The Flyers are very happy to have these 3 ageless wonders who will bring many years of ball experience to our team and help us compete in Kitchener. The Flyers are hoping that we can build on our finish at the qualifier and finish middle of the pack in Kitchener.

Stittsville pounds WC Electric 11-2 - the story

from Sam Oliver

The Stittsville 56ers rebounded from a pair of losses in Quyon on Tuesday night with an 11 - 2 win over the visiting West Carleton Electrics on Wednesday night at Alexander Grove in Stittsville.

Stittsville open the scoring in the bottom half of the first. John Craig drew a lead off walk, advanced to second on a Scott Jessiman ground ball, and scored on a Dan Jessiman double.

The 'Trics would get one run back in the top half of the third. Designated player Neil Murphy led the inning off with a single. With one out, Jason Armstrong bunted to move Murphy to second base. He would score on a Jon Daley clutch two out single to cut the 56er lead in half.

The 56ers would get that run back plus two more in the bottom half of the third. Once again it was John Craig igniting the offence, this time with a lead off double. Scott Jessiman followed this with a walk, and back to back doubles by Dan Jessiman and Sam Oliver would score three and chase Ryan from the game. Bud Hanlon came on in relief and retired the first two batters he faced on strikes, before loading the bases by issuing a pair of walks to Scott Parsons and Rob Rattray. The 56ers failed to capitalize on the opportunity as Hanlon was able to get Dan Bradley to ground out to end the inning.

West Carleton would get to Bradley for another run in the top half of the 4th. Michael Cavanagh singled to start the inning and advanced to second on a Troy Wilson bunt. Bradley was able to induce a ground ball off the bat of Shawn Rebertz, but once again West Carleton got a clutch two out single, this time from Beef Johnson to score their second run of the ball game.

Stittsville scored 3 more in the bottom half of the 4th. With one out the Jessiman brothers drew a pair of walks. A West Carleton error and a pair of singles by Darren Featherstone and Tim Power would score three and chase Hanlon from the game. He was replaced by Brad Porter who retired the next two 56er batters in order to end the threat.

Dan Bradley pitched a clean 5th inning and the 56ers came to bat in their half with a 4 run lead. Brad Porter struck out the first two batters he faced but was unable to close out the inning. Scott Jessiman singled and Dan Jessiman walked to start the rally. Sam Oliver and Darren Featherstone then hit back to back triples (with Featherstone scoring on a West Carleton throwing error) to round out the scoring. The'Trics facing a nine run lead, conceded the ball game as per the GOFL mercy rule.

Dan Bradley (5IP, 2R, 2ER, 4H, 0BB, 5K) gets the win and Jimmy Ryan (2IP, 4R, 4ER, 4H, 3BB, 1K) gets tagged with the loss with relief from Hanlon (1.1IP, 3R, 2ER, 2H, 4BB, 2K) and Porter (1.1IP, 4R, 3ER, 3H,1BB, 3K).

Manotick defeats Team Easton - with stories

Manotick won over Team Easton last night in Stittsville by a score of 3-2. Trevor Lahey got the win and Dan Konkle took the loss.

Two versions of the events:

from Cory Morrison

After Manotick opened the scoring in the top of the 1st Chad Milne led off the bottom of the inning with a walk but was throw out at second on an attempted bunt by Scott Marion. The next batter Todd Fraser flied out to center then Randy Peck hit a rbi triple to the right field corner. Easton took the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the 2nd when John Peck singled was sacrificed to second by Lukas Kamps then was singled home by Pat O'connor. Manotick tied the game in the 4th then Easton went looking for more in the bottom half of the inning as Randy Peck walked Dan Konkle flew out to center and John Peck reached on error. A wild pitch advanced both runners but Trevor Lahey was able to get out of the jam by striking out the next two batters. Manotick added another run in the top of the 5th to take a 3-2 lead and would hold on for the victory.

Easton Batters
Randy Peck 1/2 3B RBI
Pat O'connor 1/3 1B RBI
John Peck 1/3 1B Run Scored

from Tony Riches

Stittsville`s Grove park was the site of a well played game between Manotick and Easton Wednesday night. Trevor Lahey outduelled Dan Konkle and Mike Branchaud had 2 RBI singles to lead Manotick to a 3-2 victory.

The teams traded runs in the first with veterans Branchaud and Randy Peck exchanging RBI`s, the latter`s on a rare triple. Easton took their only lead in the bottom of the second on a Pat O`Connor RBI single but Manotick quickly replied with Branchaud driving in Steve Edgerton for the second time. Konkle pitched his way out of a none out, bases loaded jam in the fourth to keep the game tied but Manotick scored the eventual winning run in the fifth with Rich Antunes driving home Adam Bickell. Once again though, Konkle came up with two big strikeouts to leave runners at second and third to keep the game close. Lahey finished a solid outing, leaving the tying run at second base in the seventh.

Manotick batters
Branchaud 3-4, 2B, 2 RBI
Antunes 2-4, RBI
Edgerton 1-4, 2R

Quyon sweeps Stittsville in doubleheader - with story

from Sam Oliver

On a beautiful night, in front of the home town fans, the kids from Quyon took both halves of a double header from the 56ers on Tuesday night. The pair of victories leap frogs the Flyers into third place in the GOFL.

Game 1: Quyon 6 Stittsville 3

The 56ers put runners at 2nd and 3rd with no one out in the first inning, however Quyon starter Matt Greer would escape the jam with a pair of strike outs and ground ball to the end the threat.

Stittsville would push three across in the third inning. A lead off single by Tim Power, a pair of one out singles by James Holden and Ryan Bond, and a John Craig double scored two runs and put runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out. Dan Jessiman then hit a ground ball to Quyon SS Luke Young who elected to concede the run and take the out at first. Once Young had thrown the ball Craig broke for third, but was impeded by the SS and subsequently thrown out at third for a controversial end to the inning.

The 56ers would go on the strand 6 more base runners (8 in total) over the course of the game, but failed to produce any more runs.

The Quyon offense was quiet until the 5th inning when a Dennis McCleary lead off double, a Stittsville error, and back to back home runs by Joran Graham and Matt Greer would see the Flyers take a one run lead.

They would add to that lead in the 6th. Luke Young singled with one out to start the rally, and after Dennis McCleary grounded into a fielders choice, Joe McCleary singled.

That would be the end for Stittsville starter Darren Featherstone (5.2IP 6R, 5ER, 7H, 3BB, 6K, 2WP) who was relieved by Dan Bradley (0.1IP, 0R, 0ER, 1H, 0BB, 0K). Graham welcomed Bradley with a single that would score both McClearys and cap the Quyon scoring at 6.

Matt Greer (7IP, 3R, 3ER, 10H, 1BB, 5K) earned the victory for the Flyers who were paced by Graham's 2 hit 4 RBI performance. Darren Featherstone gets tagged with the loss and Ryan Bond had 3 hits for the56ers in a losing cause.

Game 2: Quyon 4 Stittsville 2

As this game was a makeup for June 2nd, a coin flip was used to determine home team. The 56ers won the coin toss.

The Quyon Flyers opened the scoring in the top half of the first. Dennis McCleary drew a walk which was followed by a Joe McCleary home run that just cleared the right field fence of the friendly Quyon ball yard.

Stittsville would get one run back in the bottom half of the first on the strength of a lead off home run off the bat of Ryan Bond.

The Flyers added a run in the third inning. Luke Young started the attack with a lead off single and advanced to second on a Bradley wild pitch. Joe McCleary would pick up his second hit and third RBI of the night singling into left field. 56er left fielder Darren Ladouceur threw a strike to the plate but Young was just able to beat the throw to score the run.

The 56ers would once again answer in the bottom half of the inning. Ryan Bond hit a hard ground ball that was misplayed by the Quyon SS to start the rally. This was followed by a John Craig single. After striking outthe next 56er batter, Graham surrendered a double to Sam Oliver off of the right-center field fence which scored Bond. John Craig was tagged out trying to score from first on a crisp 9-4-2 relay by the Flyers. Graham was able to strand Oliver at 2nd, striking out the next Stittsville batter to end the inning.

The Flyers added an insurance run in the 6th. Once again it would be Joe McCleary initiating the Quyon attack by leading the inning off with a single. He would advance to second on a Graham ground ball and would score on a Nick Armitage single.

Joran Graham (7IP, 2R, 1ER, 5H, 2BB, 11K, 1WP) picks up the win while Dan Bradley (7IP, 4R, 4ER, 6H, 2BB, 10K 1WP) takes the loss. Joe McCleary was the offensive star collecting three hits (HR, 2 x 1B) in three plate appearances, scoring 2 runs, and driving in 3. John Craig had two hits (1B, 2B) for the losing Stittsville 56ers.

Carp I4C Victory goes 2-2 in 45th Au Sable Forks

from Shawn Williams
Carp I4C Victory goes 2-2 in 45th Au Sable Forks Fastball Tournament and makes it to Semi-Finals
Neil Cooke loses heartbreaker to Knoxville/Ontario, 3-0 in Game 2

Four games, two teams, two wins against two teams, two losses to same two teams, two, two too much. As Yogi Berra said, “It was like déjà vu all over again.”

The Carp I4C Victory traveled to Au Sable Forks, NY to participate in the 45th Annual Au Sable Forks Fastball Tournament, the Classic of Upstate New York. The Carp roster was supplemented with four players from the Quyon Flyers and one from the Orleans Gators.

Game 1

Carp played a solid game in its first tilt on Saturday afternoon against the St. Leonard Express Juniors, a team that Carp had beaten earlier in the year in the Kingston Cowboys tournament on the May long weekend. Paul Ceppi took to the mound for Carp while St. Leonard countered with Mathieu Benoit. Behind the strong pitching performance of Ceppi, some excellent defence from Kyle Gourgon at short on the grass infield that is a converted baseball diamond for this tournament and a solo shot off the bat of Joe McCleary of the Quyon Flyers, Carp won the first game 4-2.

Game 2

This was one that was a real heartbreaker for Carp. But for one walk, Victory sponsor and starting pitcher, Neil Cooke would have had a perfect game going into the bottom of the seventh inning. But the no hitter was still intact as he faced Lefty Clark of Knoxville. With two strikes on him, Clark hit a single up the middle to break up the no hitter. However, with a runner on first and eleven strikeouts by Cooke, Carp was confident that the game would go to extra innings. Then Lyle Brown stuck his bat out to bloop a single into shallow right field. With runners now on first and second, Carp sensed that clean-up hitter, Kip Adams would bunt. But the gamesmanship between the two respective coaches continued. Knoxville knew that if Adams laid down a sacrifice bunt that would leave an open base at first and that Carp would probably intentionally walk the number five hitter to load the bases and draw the infield in. That would put Clark on third, who is not the fastest runner and allow Carp the potential of a double play or at least an out at home. Then with two out, Carp would have a force anywhere or a fly ball would get them out of the inning. Knoxville wisely let Adams hit away and he smashed the first Cooke offering over the left field fence and into the back of a red pick-up truck parked fortuitously just beyond the fence. The walk off home run gave Knoxville the 3-0 win.

Game 3

Revenge is sweet. Through a unique draw system to determine seedings for Sunday’s games, Carp actually was declared the “winner” of its pool. All three teams in the pool had identical records of 1-1. The way to break any ties had been determined on Saturday by drawing a number out of a hat to determine which team would finish ahead if there were any ties. Through nothing but sheer luck, Carp Head Coach, Shawn Williams drew number seven (out of nine teams) while Knoxville had drawn number eight and St. Leonard had drawn number nine. This made Carp the home team for its re-match with Knoxville on Sunday morning.

In the second game between the two clubs in less than 24 hours, this game was also tied 0-0 going into the bottom of the seventh. Lefty Clark had again started for Knoxville while Matt Greer of Quyon, started for Carp. Despite having to pitch out of a bases loaded situation early in the game, Greer managed to keep Knoxville off the score sheet. Then in the bottom of the seventh, Matt McNish lined a double into centre bringing Joran Graham to the plate. The young 18-year-old came through in the clutch with a double that went to the temporary fence in centrefield and bounced through for a ground rule double scoring McNish from second and giving Carp a dramatic 1-0 win.

Game 4.

This was the second time Carp faced a team that it had already faced in the tournament. This time it was a re-match against the St. Leonard Express Juniors, a team Carp had faced just 24 hours earlier. The Express were coming off an emotional quarter-final win over Gordon Oil/20 Main, a locally sponsored team by Jon Gordon and Theron Snow that was dotted with players from Ottawa Team Easton Thunder and Manotick Lomor Printers. The Express had come back to win 5-3 after being down 3-0 heading into the top of the seventh.

Carp was unsure if St. Leonard would ride a wave of emotion or if they would be drained from a dramatic last minute comeback win against the local team. In the end, it was neither. St. Leonard took an early 1-0 lead on a walk, a wild pitch and a single. Carp countered back with two runs of its own to make the score 2-1. St. Leonard scrapped back to go ahead 3-2 at which point, Williams made a change putting Ceppi in for Cooke. The lean right hander from Chatham, Ontario had handled St. Leonard quite well the day before. But control problems combined with just not quite finding the strike zone had Carp down 4-2. Then in the top of the fourth with a runner on third and two out, Jonathon Darveau drew a walk for St. Leonard. With the ball in the circle and in Ceppi’s control, Darveau started dancing off of first base in an effort to distract the pitcher and what was clearly a lead off by the rule book. Despite the protestations of Williams, Darveau was allowed to remain at first instead of being the third out of the inning. The next batter hit a single to make the score 5-2 and St. Leonard added one more in the sixth off of Graham who had replaced Ceppi in the fifth inning.

With the score 6-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Matt Alkerton of the Orleans Gators pinch hit to lead off the inning. Despite fouling off a couple of good pitches, Alkerton struck out. The next batter was Steve McCord, an addition from Quyon, who singled to centre. Mike Money hit an infield single to put runners at first and second and with one out, Kyle Gourgon came to the plate and despite his efforts, he struck out for the second out of the inning. Then up to the plate came Big Joe McCleary from Quyon who launched a three-run home run to right field to make the score 6-5. The umpires missed call on the lead off was now coming back to haunt Carp. Matt McNish came to the plate and with Frankie LeClair now in the circle for St. Leonard, McNish drew a very patient walk. He stole second and on the throw down injured his hip. McNish was replaced by Carp Player/Assistant Coach, Eric Rosenquist. Graham was at the plate with an 0-2 count and the LeClair drop ball was too tempting to lay off and he struck out to end the game.

Carp finished tied for third with a 2-2 record and a very respectable showing at the 45th Annual Au Sable Forks Fastpitch Tournament. The team is already making plans to return next year.

Carp’s next game is this Wednesday night, July 18th at 9:00 PM when it takes on the Ottawa Blitz in Manotick. The Victory’s next home game is Thursday, July 19th at 8:30 PM versus the Quyon Flyers at the Carp Fairgrounds. Admission to all home games is free.

OASA Eliminations

Looks like the OASA Eliminations has 13 teams in the Intermediate category this year, with three in the Senior category. The tournament is being played in St. Thomas on the August long weekend. No teams from the area are attending - in fact it looks like all the teams are from southwestern Ontario.

They are no longer going with the double elimination format for the Intermediates - there is round robin pool play and while the OASA site doesn't say, I would assume they are guaranteed three games (otherwise why go to pool play).

Blitz in Au Sable

Looks like the Blitz had a good time in AuSable. They had 0-3 record, but were competitive in every game. Also appears that they have picked up a new sponsor for the 2008 version of the tournament! See TC's post here.

Fastball attack in the Netherlands

Check out this story. Pretty wild.

Decos EHS player Eric Zomerdijk hospitalized
Sunday, July 15, 2007
Haarlem, Netherlands

Dear softball friends,

We are sad to inform you that our player Eric Zomerdijk has been hospitalized after being intentionally hit by a bat after the game TIW Survivors - Decos EHS.

After Decos EHS beat TIW Survivors, one of the TIW Survivors players first hit Zomerdijk in the ribs and immediately after that crushed his jaw with a bat. We are definitely not used to an incident like this in Softball The Netherlands and have to consider this as an act from a lunatic coward.

Eric went down and was unconscious for about 5-10 minutes lying on the field in a pool of blood. In the hospital he has been diagnosed with a very heavy concussion and a broken jaw. Luckily the brain scan didn't show any brain damage and they will probably operate surgery tomorrow.

The idiot who did this has been immediately suspended for life by his club and Softball The Netherlands will probably do the same the coming week. He has not been arrested yet but will be shortly.

Again, this has been a terrible act of violence by one man and we will not let this affect our great game.

Our heart goes out to Eric and his family

Au Sable Report - "Gordon Oil/20 Main"

from Tony Riches

A combination squad made up of GOFL players from Easton and Manotick, a couple of Peterborough players and a little help from the locals entered the AuSable tournament this past weekend. Thanks to the generosity of local businessmen Jon Gordon and Theron Snow the team played as Gordon Oil/20 Main.

Following an extremely touching opening ceremony, a tribute to local athlete Johnny Nixon, who played in the tournament last July but is now stricken with ALS, Friday night saw the team face CPI of Oswego, NY. Dan Konkle threw a one-hitter and Craig Buttars hit a solo homer to lead the way defeating one of the ISC`s top ranked teams by a score of 2-1.

Saturday afternoon Gordon/20 Main played Donnacona, QC and Jeff Murphy took a turn throwing a solid one-hit shutout and Dan Jessiman led a constant offensive attack with a homer in a 7-0 victory.

Their 2-0 record gave the team a #2 seed going into Sunday`s single elimination format and a tough draw against a very good St Leonard squad and pitcher Francois Leclaire. Dave Tubman broke a scoreless tie with a solo homer and Calvin Medynski drove in a run with a single and scored a run to stake Gordon/20 Main and starter Jeff Murphy to a 3-0 lead entering the 7th inning. But the scrappy St Leonard team managed to mount an attack and used an infield hit, a bloop and two singles to tie the game and force a pitching change. Dan Konkle entered and following a walk, St Leonard got another bloop hit that just eluded a diving Dan Jessiman and scored two runs to gave the Express a 5-3 lead. The Oilers tried to mount a comback in the bottom half of the final inning with a Dave Tubman single but, for the second time in the game, Jessiman's long fly was caught at the fence, this time for the final out.

As usual, this tournament was extremely well run and the locals were very hospitable and great company. Any team looking for a midseason event would be hard pressed to find a better place to spend a weekend.

Stittsville beats Easton 5-1 on Thursday

from Sam Oliver

There was an air of anticipation at the Carp Fair Grounds on Thursday night. The site would host a double header featuring four of the GOFL's leading teams; the first match up pitting the Stittsville 56ers against Team Easton for the third time this week, with the season series on the line. Adding to the electricity was the fact that local news man Terry Marcotte would be on hand to do a feature story on the GOFL, expecting to see two of the league's premier pitchers, Dan Bradley and Dan Konkle, duel it out.

When the first pitch was thrown however, Dan Konkle was conspicuous by his absence - perhaps a sign of things to come. Instead, it was Quyon legend, Todd Fraser, known more for towering home runs and not ever being stuck for words, that delivered the pitch. The first Stittsville batter, Ryan Bond opened the scoring by taking the 4th Fraser offering over the left field fence. Then with one out, Dan Jessiman doubled and advance to third on a Fraser wild pitch. He would later score on a ground ball off the bat of Darren Featherstone, giving the 56ers a two run lead after the first half inning.

Stittsville would score 2 more in the second on the strength of a Dan Bradley 2 run homerun over the centerfield fence. Fraser would finish the inning, but was relieved in the third. Once again, it would not be Konkle getting the call from the bull pen, but his young protege Kyle
Olsen. The kid would go on to pitch 5 strong innings allowing only 1 run. Back to back singles by Darren Featherstone and Sam Oliver to open the 5th inning, put runners at 2nd and 3rd with no one out. Although Olsen retired the next three batters, Featherstone was able to score on a ground ball of the bat of Scott Jessiman, stretching the Stittsville lead to 5 - 0.

As expected, Stittsville ace Dan Bradley started the game, and pitched masterfully for the win. The tall right hander did not allow a runner until Cory Morrison walked in the 4th. The first hit he surrendered, was a single by John Peck in the 5th. Easton did manage a run in the seventh to break the goose egg. Consecutive singles by Pat O'Connor, Scott Marion, and Dave Tubman resulted in the lone Easton run.

The third inning saw CTV's Terry Marcotte step into the box. Although the newsman had played some baseball in his youth, he had never played fastpitch. He did well to catch a piece of the 2nd Bradley drop ball offering, but Marcotte was retired on strikes in three consecutive pitches.

The top of the 4th saw Marcotte playing the one bag where he received an initiation by fire as Tim Power started the inning by ripping a hard liner just to the right of the reporter. Unphased, Marcotte finished the inning recording two put outs in the process, the last two outs of the inning.

With the game completed, Dan Konkle could be contained no longer. During the third inning of the West Carleton - Carp match up, Konkle would make his presence known. Commandeering a local resident's mini-motor cycle, the Easton right hander raced onto the field of play through the centerfield gate. After completing a tour through the outfield and around the home plate umpire (including one fall and many near falls), Konkle raced back through the outfield gate from which he had entered. The exit was not a thing of grace. Twenty feet beyond the outfield fence, the star pitcher, who's riding style can best be described as "unstable" (not unlike his personality) performed a cyclist's worst fear - "The Endo". He flew over the handle bars of the tiny bike and after a short tumbling demonstration, emerged on his feet with a smile on his face. The bike did suffer some minor damage - CLASSIC! (picture to follow tomorrow).

Carp over WC Electric 3-1

I4C Victory defeated WC Electric by a score of 3-1 on Thursday night in Carp.

Trevor Wood had the pitching win, throwing all seven innings. Brad Porter took the loss, also throwing a good game.

Carp had a two out walk from Kyle Gourgon in the first inning. The young shortstop stole second, but was left stranded there.

In the second, I4C scored the first run of the game. Brooks Paziuk reached on an error. Trevor Wood attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt and popped up. Then Pete Petit tried a sac bunt as well, and also popped up for the second out. However, Paziuk caught the ‘Trics infield napping, tagged up on the popped bunt, and moved to second. Eric Colvin then came through with a clutch double to score Paziuk and put the home team up 1-0.

Wood retired the first nine batters he faced in order. The only excitement for WC in the first three innings came in the form of the DK side show in the top of the third, as the players, fans and umps were entertained by a certain #27 from Team Easton completing a complete circuit of the infield on a pocket bike. See below for an “artist’s conception” of the entertainer.

In the bottom of the third, Gourgon again reached base with two out, this time legging out an infield single, but this time when he attempted to steal second, Beef Johnson threw him out.

Michael Cavanagh had a two out double for WC Electric in the top of the fourth to break up the no-hitter, but was left stranded.

Porter retired the side in the fourth and fifth innings, as the score remained 1-0 for Carp.

WC Electric tied the game in the top of the sixth. Steve Cavanagh reached base on an infield hit on which I4C shortstop Gourgon made a diving stab and just about came up with the play. Cavanagh stole second to put himself in scoring position – then Trevor Barton hit a two-out double to cash the younger Cavanagh. With the game tied, and Barton on second, Carp Coach had a conference with Wood and Victory decided to intentionally walk Mike Cavanagh to face clean-up hitter Shawn Rebertz. The move worked, as Rebertz grounded out to end the inning.

Carp came back to score two in the top of the sixth, as Al Read hit a one out single and was sacrificed to second by Gourgon. Matt McNish then drove a ball to short, which Mike Cavanagh knocked down and prevented a run, but runners were now on the corners. With Paziuk at the plate, a wild pitch allowed McNish to move to second. Paziuk subsequent hit a dribbler in front of the plate, which was fielded by Porter, but popped out of the first baseman’s glove, allowing Read and McNish to score to put Carp up 3-1.

Despite a Beef Johnson double to lead off the seventh, WC Electric could not muster another run and the game ended 3-1 for the home side.

Trevor Wood threw seven innings, allowed one earned run, four hits, struck out eight and had one intentional walk. Carp made no errors.

Brad Porter threw six innings, allowed three runs, none of which were earned, four hits, struck out seven and walked one. WC Electric made two costly errors both of which resulted in runs.

Offensively for I4C Victory, Al Read was 1-3 with a run scored. Kyle Gourgon was 1-1 with a walk, a stolen base and a sac bunt. Matt McNish was 1-3 with a run scored and Eric Colvin was 1-2 with a double and an RBI.

For the ‘Trics, Mike Cavanagh was 1-2 with a double and an intentional walk, Beef Johnson was 1-3 with a double, Steve Cavanagh was 1-2 with a stolen base and a run scored, while Trevor Barton was 1-3 with a double and an RBI.

Jon Daley led off the game with an inside the park home run deep to the left field corner to put WC up 1-0.

WC scored a second run in the second inning. Beef Johnson reached on an misplayed pop up, put was put out at second on a fielder's choice hit by Neil Murphy. Trevor Barton then walked. After a strikeout, Steve Cavanagh then walked to load the bases. Jon Daley then walked as well for his second RBI of the game.

In the fifth, Todd Clouthier drew a one-out walk, when moved to third on a Troy Wilson single. Wilson used his blazing speed to steal second. Clean up many Shawn Rebertz then walked to load the bases once again. Steve Johnson then hit into a fielder's choice to get an RBI and put the 'Trics ahead 3-0.

Trying not to remember a collapse against Orleans the week before, WC went into the bottom of the seventh the three run lead. The wheels loosened, but didn't fall off. Lindsay Medynski led off with a single to left, that was misplayed allowing him to get to second. Steve Edgerton then hit a ground ball that was cleanly fielded but overthrown at first. This overthrow allowed Medynski to score with none out. After Rich Antunes hit into a fielders' choice, Jon Daley made a nice catch in centre on a hard hit Joe Allan drive, and Shawn Rebertz made a nice play at third on a sharply hit Adam Bickell ground ball to end the game and preserve the win.

Make up game WC Electric vs. Team Easton

Game 21 WC Electric at Team Easton will be made up on Monday July 23 at 8:30 in Pakenham, assuming we can get officials. Pakenham is WC pitcher Jimmy Ryan's hometown and he wants to bring a game to the many fastball fans that live in the village.

Stittsville 8 Orleans 1

from Sam Oliver

The Stittsville 56ers defeated the visiting Orleans Gators by a score of 8 - 1 in a mercy shortened 5 inning game.

Fortunately for the 56ers, Dan Bradley's right shin was feeling little ill effect from the Randy Peck line drive that forced him to leave the game the night before, and he was the Stittsville starter on the night. For the Orleans Gators, their leader Chad Hargrove got the nod.

Orleans would strike first and wasted no time doing it. After recording the first two outs in order, Bradley surrendered a free pass to Orleans catcher Matt Bowman. The next batter, Hargrove, stroked a clutch triple into the right-center field gap, scoring Bowman from first. This would be all the offense the Gators could muster.

Stittsville answered in the bottom of the first. John Craig started the attack with a lead off walk and stole second. Dan Jessiman drew a one out walk of his own, and advanced into scoring position on a Hargrove wild pitch. Darren Featherstone singled over the head of Orleans third baseman Max Serre, scoring both Craig and Jessiman, with the throw to the plate allowing Featherstone to reach second base. With Sam Oliver batting, Featherstone was able to take third on another Hargrove wild pitch. This would prove costly as Oliver lined out to center field deep enough to score the run.

The 56ers added another run in the 2nd and four more in the 4th. Tim Power started the 2nd inning with a double, and scored on a clutch 2 out single off the bat of John Craig. In the 4th, Hargrove would be replaced by Eric Lafleur after issuing a one out walk to 56er left fielder James Holden. Lafleur walked Craig, gave up a double to Scott Herriot, and a homerun to Dan Jessiman to make the score 8 - 1. After giving up a single to Featherstone and hitting Oliver with a pitch, Lafleur was able to induce a ground out and a fly out to end the inning.

Featherstone came on to pitch the 5th for the 56ers and was greeted with a Matt Alkerton come backer. Featherstone didn't field it cleanly and then over threw first base to allow Alkerton to reach second. Eric Lafleur then singled to put runners on the corners. Featherstone was
able to escape the jam by striking out the next three Orleans batters in order.

Dan Bradley gets the win, pitching 4 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 1 hit, with 1 BB, while striking out 7. Darren Featherstone pitched 1 inning of relief, not allowing a run, giving up one hit while striking out 3.

For Orleans, Chad Hargrove gets tagged with the loss, allowing 5 earned runs on 4 hits, 3 BBs, 2 WP, while striking out 8. Eric Lafleur worked one inning of relief, allowing 3 earned runs on 3 hits, 1 BB, 1 HB, with 0K.

Chad Hargrove (3B) and Eric Lafleur (1B) had the hits for the losers, while Jessiman (1B, HR) and Featherstone (2 x 1B) had two hits each for the 56ers.

Do you believe in softball?

A bit cheesy, but I think most fastball players can relate to a lot of this.

Team Easton 8 Stittsville 3 - updated

from Sam Oliver

Team Easton, who lost to the 56ers earlier this week, exacted a measure of revenge with an 8-3 victory at Alexander Grove in Stittsville on Tuesday night.

Dan Bradley once again started for Stittsville, and after retiring the first two Easton batters, have up a double to right fielder Cory Morrison. The next batter, Randy Peck lined a hard shot that caught Bradley square on the right shin, forcing him to leave the game. He was replaced by Darren Featherstone, who walked the first batter he faced, Dan Konkle, to load the bases. With two out and the bases juiced, Chad Milne fought off an inside rise, fisting a flare just out of reach of the infield, scoring both Morrison and Peck.

Stittsville threatened in the top half of the second, when a pair of walks and a well executed sacrifice bunt, put runners at second and third with two out. Easton pitcher, Dan Konkle, was able to escape the jam, getting Tim Power to ground out to end the inning.

The 56ers would get one run back in the top half of the third inning. John Craig led off the inning and reached on an error. He advanced to second on a Konkle wild pitch, and was moved to third via a Darren Ladouceur sac bunt. With one out, Dan Jessiman delivered a fly ball deep enough to left field to score the run.

Easton would answer with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Randy Peck started the rally with a one out single into left field. Featherstone struck out the next Easton batter, but once again with two out, Chad Milne hit a Texas league single to keep the rally alive. The 56ers looked to be out of the jam when John Peck hit a ground ball to first base that was fielded cleanly, however Peck, who never gives up on a play, was able to race the first baseman to the bag for an infield single which loaded the bases. The next batter, Pat O'Connor, lifted a high fly ball into centerfield which dropped into no mans land to score two runs and extend the lead to 4 - 1.

In the top half of the 5th inning, the 56ers would close the gap to 4- 3. A lead off walk to Darren Ladouceur followed by a Jessiman single and a Featherstone walk, loaded the bases with no outs. Sam Oliver then hit a hard ground ball that Easton second baseman, Scott Marion couldn't come up with, scoring two runs and putting runners on the corners. The 56ers then tried the slow steal of second in an attempt to score the runner from third, Team Easton defensed it perfectly cutting down Featherstone in a close play at the plate. With two out, Rob Rattray hit a sharp single up the middle that might have scored Oliver from second, however, Morrison who had taken over in centerfield at the start of the inning, was positioned perfectly and fielded the ball very quickly, holding Oliver at third base.

Easton added a run in the 5th and three more runs in the 6th to put the game out of reach, capping the score at 8 - 3.

In the 5th inning, Randy Peck's and Chad Milne's third hit each on the night, a double and a single, accounted for the run.

In the 6th Lukas Kamps walked to lead off the inning and Kyle Olsen reached on an error, moving Kamps to third, but Olsen was tagged out trying to take second on the play. Morrison drove in Kamps with a single, and Randy Peck reached base for the fourth time on the night, drawing a walk. Dan Konkle then singled into left field, however the ball skipped passed the 56er outfielder to score both Morrison and Peck.

Dan Jessiman and Darren Ladouceur each had two hits for the losers, while Randy Peck and Chad Milne had three hits each for the winners (Peck reached safely and scored in all 4 of his plate appearances).

Dan Konkle pitched the win, going 7 innings, allowing 3 runs, on 7 hits and 6 BBs, with 8Ks. For Stittsville, Dan Bradley went 2/3 of inning and is charged with 2 earned runs on 2 hits, 0 BB, 0K. Darren Featherstone takes the loss, going 5 and 1/3, allowing 6 runs (4 earned) on 10 hits, 1 BB, 1 HB, with 9K.

The rubber match of the season series is scheduled for this Thursday night at the Carp Fairgrounds. Game time is 7:00pm.

GOFL on CTV Ottawa - Update

The Greater Ottawa Fastball League is working on getting some publicity and game footage on the local CTV Ottawa affiliate. More information to follow as things are firmed up - check the blog tomorrow for more information and get your VCR ready (or your PVR thingy if your home entertainment technology has escaped the 90s unlike mine).

Update:

The plan is that Terry Marcotte from the 6PM News, CTV Ottawa Sports will suit up for Team Easton in uniform for their game tonight against Stittsville 56ers (7PM at Carp Fairgrounds). Apparently he has been doing this kind of piece where he gets imbedded into an actual sporting event to experience the game. He will take an at bat in the game, and play an inning at defence to experience fastball at its highest level in Ottawa. Should be lots of fun, and good publicity for the league. I'll make sure to post the details of when the segment will be aired as soon as I find out. Thanks to Shawn Williams for setting up this promo opportunity for the league and for fastball in general.
