West Carleton beats Valley 10-7

West Carleton Electric earned their first win of the season in Greater Ottawa Fastball League play on Thursday in Carp with a 10-7 victory over the Ottawa Valley As.

The Electric got out to a 7-0 lead and held off an As comeback.

Steve Cavanagh got the win throwing five innings, with Matt McKay getting the save. Adam Rueckwald took the loss for Valley.

WC got off to a big start in the first. Alex Boucaud led off with a single and scored on Jon Daley's triple. After a ground out, Chris Costello plated Daley with a single, then he scored when Neil Murphy drilled a homer to right field.

The Electric added two in the second inning. McKay hit an infield single and scored on another Daley triple. Daley reached home on a Jeff Cavanagh single.

Fitzroy put another run across in the third to go up 7-0. Steve Cavanagh singled, moved to second on a walk to Chris Trafford and after a fly out scored on a single from Matt McKay.

Some spectacular defense from West Carleton kept the As off the board in the third. The loaded the bases with two walks and an infield single, but a great play by Trafford at shortstop to take away a hit and get a put out ended the threat. Valley once again loaded the bases in the fourth on an error, single and walk but Cavanagh got out of the jam.

Facing the possibility of the mercy rule being invoked in the bottom of the fifth, the As came up with a five run showing. Clayton Vance started things with a triple and he scored on a wild pitch. Dave Baird walked and Ryley Burns singled to put two on and they subsequently scored on Sean Lecuyer's homer to left field. Another run was added when Connor Armstrong tripled and was cashed on Lindsay Medynski's single.

WC scored another run in the sixth. Costello reached based on an error and scored on Steve Cavanagh's RBI single.

Valley closed the gap to 8-7 in the bottom of six. With McKay in to pitch, Vance drilled a pitch out for a solo homer. After a fly out, Burns singled, moved to second on a single by Kyle Couvieau, then scored on John Sullivan's single.

The Electric answered back in the top of the seventh with a Trevor Barton solo homerun and another run generated by a Boucaud single, a walk to Daley, a wild pitch and an RBI ground out by Jeff Cavanagh.

McKay shut down Valley in order in the bottom of seven to seal the win.

The Micksburg Twins remained undefeated with a 7-2 win over West Carleton Electric on Tuesday night in Fitzroy Harbour.

West Carleton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Trevor Barton walked with one out, and Chris Costello walked with two out. Neil Murphy's infield single loaded the bases. Mitch Taylor's flare single scored two to put the Trics up.

The Twins plated a run in the top of the second. Quinton Rook singled with two out, moved to second when Connor Moss walked, and scored on Andrew McIntyre's single.

Micksburg added another two in the third. Jamey Mick walked with two out and scored on Chad Costello's homer that went up into the trees in centrefield at the Harbour diamond.

The fourth inning saw the visitors plate another three run. After a fly out, Matt McIntyre doubled. Graham then walked. Brad Steege hit a spinner to the pitcher, who attempted to get the out at home but Matty Mac scored. After Mick walked once again, Chad Costello's fielder's choice scored one and an errant throw scored another to put the Twins up 6-2.

Micksburg added another run in the fifth. Following a ground out, consecutive walks were issued to two Opeongo High School grade twelve students (John Enright and Ryan McIntryre). Matt McIntyre then hit a hard screamer which was just knocked down by Tric's second baseman Trevor Barton, loading the bases. Graham's ball driven back at the pitcher was then misplayed, allowing Enright to score to make it 7-2.
