The return of Woody

Last night at the GOFL game in Shawville, it was great to see a once-familiar face back playing fastball in our league.

Randy Peck, one of the top fastball players ever produced in the area - certainly the best player ever to come from Danford Lake, QC - is suiting up this season for the Quyon Flyers.

The owner of R. Peck Construction played several seasons in the GOFL with the Ottawa Team Easton before taking a temporary retirement a few years back. He is playing this year as well with the Toronto Gators Masters tournament team.

Here are a few old newspaper stories about Randy from an earlier blog posting.

A great guy, top notch player and a busy father of five with tons of fastball experience - just for example, he played in the ISC World Tournament in 1990: that's two years before the pitcher he faced last night was even born!

Kars beats I4C Victory 3-1 in Manotick night cap UPDATED

In the late game at Manotick, the Kars Aces earned their second win of the night by a 3-1 score over I4C Victory.

Brad Porter earned the pitching win allowing only two hits, while Andrew Putnam took the loss despite tossing a one-hitter.

Kevin McGuire had a solo home run for I4C.

Info from Chad Milne

Kars won the second game of its double-header on Wednesday night, downing I4C by a score of 3-1. Brad Porter pitched for Kars, while Andrew Putnam pitched for I4C.

There wasn’t a lot of scoring in this one. I4C scored their lone run of the game on a long homerun to centre off the bat of Kevin McGuire in the bottom of the 3rd inning to make the score 1-0. As was the case in their first game, Kars responded in their next at bat. In the top of the 4th inning, Kars struck out 5 times and had only 1 hit, a line drive rbi double of the bat of Matt Alkerton, but Kars was able to score 3 runs. A few passed balls and an I4C error contributed to the outburst by Kars. There was no scoring in the last 3½ innings of the game.

Of note, Putnam had 19 strikeouts and allowed only 1 hit for I4C.

Co-players of the game earning the Caveman's Choice: the battery of Brad Porter and Matt Alkerton.

Kars Aces beats Quyon 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh UPDATED

Greater Ottawa Fastball League action on Wednesday night saw the Kars Aces beating the Quyon Flyers 5-4 in the early game in Manotick.

The Aces broke a 4-4 deadlock with a run scored by Kristian Knapp in the bottom of the seventh to seal the victory.

Cory Alkerton earned the pitching win and also contributed with a home run. Matt Greer took the loss but had a big night at the plate going two for two with two walks, three runs batted in and a home run.

Details provided by Chad Milne

Game 1 vs Quyon:

Kars Aces picked up their first win of the season by a score of 5-4 in a back-and-forth contest with the Quyon Flyers. Cory Alkerton pitched for Kars, while Matt Greer pitched for Quyon.

Quyon got on the board in the top of the 1st inning on a 2-run homer off the bat of Matt Greer. Kars responded in the bottom of the 1st with 3 runs of their own. Nick Ellis tripled and was brought home by a Cory Morrison double. Two batters later, Cory Alkerton connected for a 2-run homer to left-centre, scoring Morrison.

After two scoreless innings, Quyon tied the game with a run in the top of the 4th inning. But Kars got that run right back in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Matt Pollard doubled and later scored on a sharp single to right field by left fielder, and former Eastons Corners League batting champ, Brad Porter.

After two more scoreless innings, Quyon tied the game again in the top of the 7th inning. With two out and with two strikes against him, Matt Greer lined a ball just off the end of the outstretched glove of the Kars 2nd baseman, but it was enough to drive in the tying run from 2nd base. But again Kars came right back in the bottom of the 7th. Kristian Knapp lead off with a single. When the next batter Ellis hit a bouncing ball that deflected off the Quyon 2nd baseman’s glove into right field, Knapp raced around the bases and Quyon could not get the ball back into home in time to prevent Knapp from scoring the winning run.

Caveman's Choice as Player of the game: Cory Alkerton for a gritty pitching performance and his 2-run homer.

Kanata and Stittsville tie at 9 - WITH DETAILS

The Kanata Pirates and the Stittsville 56ers tied at 9 in Greater Ottawa Fastball League action at the Grove on Wednesday night.

Trevor Lahey and Derick Bulley pitched for Kanata. Dan Konkle and Darren Featherstone handled pitching duties for Stittsville.

Johnny Craig provides the details.

In the first walks to Joe Allen and Aaron Amo were cashed by a Jon Ferguson double and he would later score on a 56er error to put Kanata out to a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second Ryan Bond lead off on a walk and moved to second on a sac bunt.  Dan Bradley then hit a ground ball up the left side and Bond got caught in a good old fashion game of pickle.  Despite the valiant effort, the Pirates got him and Bradley moved to second, he would later score on a Trevor Scott single, 3-1.

In the third Kanata scored two more on singles from Amo, Ferguson and Tony MacDonald taking a 5-1 lead.

Stittsville would get one back when Scott Herriot singled, stole second and then scored on a Dan Jessiman single cutting the lead to 3.

The 4th was a big inning for the 56ers as old long arms Bradley blasted a home run well up the lights to opposite field.  They would cash in 4 more on a walk to Scott and singles to Ladouceur, Nystedt, Featherstalone, and Herriot taking a 7-5 lead as the Pirates relieved Lahey on the hill with Bulley part way through.

Kanata answered right back though when Bulley hit a missile over the left field fence followed by Ferguson’s blast to right - the back to back shots tied the game and the 56ers went to the bull pen; enter Dan Konkle relieving Featherstone.

Top of 6 now, as the players expect daylight to break any minute, they soldier on. Kanata scores two more on a single to Allen, a double to Schonfield and a Stittsville error taking a 9-7 which they would hold into the bottom of 7.

Scott Parsons was hit by a pitch to lead things off and then scored on Bradley’s double. Dan Konkle then hit a triple to centre tying the game and bringing the winning run to third with one out, but the Pirates were able to close out the marathon, 9-9.

In a GOFL first, the Caveman's Choice for player of the game was Scott Jessiman, despite his being on the 56ers Injured Reserve list. Reason? He showed up with four pizzas for the Stittsville team for their post game nourishment.

In Greater Ottawa Fastball League play on Tuesday night in Fitzroy Harbour, the visiting Micksburg Twins edged West Carleton Electric 2-1 in the first game for both teams.

Corey Costello earned the win, with Joran Graham picking up the save. The lone Fitzroy hit was a Trevor Barton bunt single in the third.

Andy Barber threw well in taking the loss for Fitzroy allowing only three hits.

The Twins scored their runs in the third. Paul Griffith lead off with a walk. Mark Bell then bunted with two strikes, pushing the ball down third. The Electric attempted to get the lead runner, but the throw was errant. A sacrifice bunt by Riley Hennessy moved the runners over 60 feet. With the infield drawn in, Kerr Childerose punched a single through the middle to score both runs and put the Twins up 2-0, earning himself the nod as the Caveman's Choice as player of the game.

Costello threw four shutout innings, facing 13 batters, but gave way to Graham in the fifth. After a ground out, Dave Bahm reached first on a Micksburg error. Neil Murphy walked to put two on. The following batter grounded out. Trevor Barton then popped up, but it was misplayed and the bases were full. A walk to Andy Barber scored a run for the 'Trics. Graham got out of the inning with a strikeout.

There was no further scoring and the Twins prevailed with a 2-1 victory.

8th Annual Molly Sherman Memorial Tournament in Elkland May 23-25

The 8th Annual Molly Sherman Memorial Tournament will be held in Elkland, PA from May 23 - 25.

Twelve teams are competing - most from New York and Pennsylvania, but this year, there will be a local team at "The Molly" as the Orleans Rebels tourney squad is making the trek.

My sources tell me that the Rebels team will feature GOFLers from West Carleton Electric, Kanata Pirates, Quyon Flyers, and some players from the Blackburn Men's Fastball League, all lead by a member of the Toronto Gators (formerly of the GOFL's Orleans Gators).

Full schedule here.

REMINDER: Gil Read Tournament July 25-27 still has room for teams

The "Gil" is still looking for a few teams to confirm for the tournament this year. If your team is interested, now is the time to let the organizers know so they can ensure they have enough to make it viable.

It's a great annual event and all local men's teams should consider entering. It would also be great if other teams from outside eastern Ontario  / western Quebec could join and be a part of a great tournament with great crowds for a great cause.

GOFL week #2

Week 2 of the Greater Ottawa Fastball League schedule has five games on tap.

Tuesday night sees West Carleton Electric with their home opener, facing defending champions Micksburg Twins at 8:30 pm in Fitzroy Harbour in the first game of the season for both clubs.

The Wednesday nighter in the Grove has the Stittsville 56ers (0-1) hosting the Kanata Pirates (1-0) at 8:30 pm. The doubleheader in Manotick has Quyon Flyers in their opener against the host Kars Aces (0-1) at 7 pm, with I4C Victory (1-0) hosting Kars in the second game at 9 pm.

Thursday night in Carp has Kanata playing host to Stittsville at 8:30 pm.

There was originally a game in Quyon on Thursday as well but with the Ferry closed until later in the month and I4C with player issues, the game is being postponed until a later date. Update: Turns out as well the field in Quyon is very soggy and still unplayable due to the high water conditions on the Ottawa River.

The Napanee Express men's team finished 4-1 at the Woodstock tournament this past weekend, losing out in the A semi-finals to the eventual champs the Shakespeare Falcons. Several ISC level teams were competing at this event.

(In an aside, please tell me I am not the only person juvenile enough to have laughed at the team listed as the "Toronto Master Gators" - see game 5. I am thinking Toronto Gators Masters would be a better formulation.)

Kanata 5 Kars 4 - with DETAILS

The Kanata Pirates won tonight in Carp in their first game in the Greater Ottawa Fastball League with a 5-4 rain-shortened victory over the Kars Aces.

Jason Smith earned the win for the Pirates with relief from Trevor Lahey while Brad Porter took the loss. Kristian Knapp and Cory Morrison had homers for Kars.

details from Duane Bromley

Kanata Pirates win their inaugural game in the GOFL, edging Kars Aces 5-4 in a rain shortened game on Thursday.

Kars got off to a quick start as Kristian Knapp led off the game with a home run. Kanata threatened in the bottom of the first but their aggressive base running ran them out of the inning as Joe Allen was caught trying to steal home and Kevin Shonfield got caught rounding second after walking to get on base.

Kanata scored three in the bottom of the second sending eight men to the plate. Jon Ferguson and Trevor Power led off the inning with walks and Ferguson scored on Lindsay Medynski’s double. After Kevin Williams walked to load the bases, Power scored when Trevor Watts was hit by a pitch. Medynski later scored after tagging up when Joe Allen’s shallow fly to left was caught by Kars shortstop Nick Ellis.  Ellis had no chance at the plate but made a head’s up play throwing out Kevin Williams trying for third. Brad Porter gave up another walk but got out of the jam when Aaron Amo was caught looking.

Kars used the long ball again to regain the lead 4-3 in the top of the third on Cory Morrison’s three-run shot to centre.

The see-saw battle continued in the bottom of the third.  Derrick Bulley led off the inning with a triple and scored when Kars 2nd baseman Knapp couldn’t scoop Trevor Power’s slow bouncer. Power advanced to second on a wild pitch and on to third when Medynski was thrown out at first. Power later scored on another wild pitch to make it 5-4 for the home team (note: it was actually Medynski who scampered home as he was running for Power on the two-out catcher rule).

Trevor Lahey entered the game in relief of Kanata’s starter Jason Smith. While he gave up a single he got out of the inning quickly with a pair of strikeouts. With rain starting to fall, Trevor Watts led off the home half of the inning with his first career GOFL homerun. The skies started to open up and with a bleak forecast the blue crew quickly called the game.

Trevor Power gets the Caveman’s Choice as player of the game scoring twice including the winning run.

Mike Money then drove in Simzer on a double to make it 5 - 0.
