Micksburg Twins win 2016 GOFL playoff title

The Micksburg Twins won the Greater Ottawa Fastball League title on Thursday night with a 3-2 win over the visting Kars Aces to go undefeated in the playoffs.

There were about 200 in attendance at the park in Micksburg (attendance count by the Caveman) on a beautiful late September night.

Joran Graham had the win with five innings of work allowing five hits and striking out 11. Corey Costello got the save, chucking hitless ball in the sixth and seventh and fanning five.

Brad Porter threw very well in taking the loss for Kars allowing only three hits and striking out 12.

Kars got on the board in the top of the first inning. Brad Pender hit a slap infield single with one out. Pender stole second and took third on an overthrow. He scored on Cory Morrison's double to centrefield.

Micksburg got on the board in the bottom of the opening frame. Graham walked with two out and Corey Costello hit a home run to left centre much to the delight of the local crowd, making it 2-1 for the home team.

Both teams went three up three down in the second inning.

Ian King lead off with a walk in the top of the third for Kars. Kristian Knapp then drove a ball off the top of the fence to right. King held up making sure the ball wasn't caught. With Knapp close on his tail, King tried to score but was thrown out at home. Knapp advanced to third on the throw. A line drive to centre by Brad Pender was a sac fly to score Knapp and tie the game at 2-2.

Graham got on base with two out for Micksburg in the third on a misplayed grounder. However a hard hit ball right at Porter allowed him to get out of the inning unscathed.

Chad Milne got a two out single for Kars in the fourth but was stranded after the next batter struck out.

Porter struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth to keep things knotted at two.

In the top of the fifth, Will Dunk bunted for a single to lead off. After a strike out, Knapp hit a hard drive to short, but Andrew McIntyre was able to glove it in the air and double off Dunk to end the inning.

Quinton Rook walked to start the bottom of the fifth for the Twins. Rook stole second. After a strike out, McIntyre had a great at bat and drove a ball into left to score Rook and give Micksburg the 3-2 lead. Porter induced a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Corey Costello came in to relieve Graham in the sixth and struck out two. Morrison got on due to a misplayed fly to left, then another strikeout.

Graham lead off the sixth for Micksburg with a single, but Porter got two strikeouts and a pop up to get out of it.

Costello sealed the win in the top of the seventh with two strike outs and a pop up to end the game, and claim the 2016 GOFL Playoff championship for the Micksburg Twins.

The Kars Aces advanced to the Greater Ottawa Fastball League Championship Final with a 9-4 win over the hometown Quyon Flyers on Sunday afternoon.

Brad Porter had the win on the slab while Trevor Lahey took the loss.

Balls were flying out of the Quyon Fairgrounds diamond all afternoon. Ian King had two home runs for Kars, as did Nick Armitage for Quyon. Nick Ellis and Matt Alkerton also had homers for the Aces.

All in One Septic & Excavating win FHMFL title (with photos)

All in One Septic and Excavating won 10-7 over regular season title holder Murphy's Plumbing on Monday night to take the championship series of the eight team Fitzroy Harbour Men's Fastball League two games to one.

Murphy's had a 3-2 lead at one point after back-to-back-to-back solo homers, including a bomb from Ryan Conners that landed at third base on the upper diamond.

However All in One battled back and held on for win. Adam Rueckwald and Rory Burns threw for the champs. Jeff Campbell, Chris Campbell and Spencer Campbell threw for Murphy's.

Memories of Elkland - Tenth Anniversary Edition

As per tradition, this is the annual Memories of Elkland post - the tenth one, as I have attended the Labour Day tournament in Pennsylvania every year since 2007.

This year turned out to be the best ever result for West Carleton Electric. We finished with three wins and two losses and played on Monday for the first time ever. This was also a year in which I had 7 confirmed players a week beforehand until I figured things out to finalize the roster.

Our squad this year was composed of six guys from our league team, three others from the GOFL, one Harbour Baller that came along for the ride and our first ever US American local pickup (who played great and fit in well).

There were thirteen teams this year, with the usual mix of ISC teams and pitchers, intermediate level squads and local clubs. The weather was fantastic, with beautiful sunny days and cool nights.

All the statistics were kept and reported on via Al's Fastball. The stats were great, but I still contend that when I "reached on an error" in our fourth game, it actually was an infield hit.

The "shenanigans factor" was reduced this year for WC due to the absence of a few key individuals. When you don't have the guys that invented beer can midget wrestling, the Terminator eyefirewood shoes and pickup truck extension cord water skiing, it turns out that the craziness at base camp gets toned down a little. It also turns out that on field performance improves - who knew?

We did however enjoy the weekend camping at the park - the only way to go - and the comraderie that comes with spending three days together at the best fastpitch park I've ever been to. Several of us also made it all three nights (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) to experience the night life at The Moose where many ballplayers and locals congregated to chug cheap beer and tell stories.

The chicken was once again top notch, the pints were two US bucks each and the pump cheese hotdogs were tasty. The Elkland Softball Association (ESA) knows how to do concessions right!

The fields were in great shape, and in the spirit of continuous improvement that we have come to expect in Elkland, they have installed a new scoreboard on Field Two (which used to be Field Three).

It was great to see all the familiar faces back at the event. Ugo never left his perch the whole weekend in the scorer's / announcer's box above the first base dugout on Field One. The Lip was there with his friendly demeanour and do-rag. Jesse the Bat Boy returned again (nine of ten years he has been there and supported West Carleton). The Chicken Lady made sure we were well fed. The "Get Your Pants Dirty" guy was screaming his head off , blathering on with a steady stream of nonsense. The bartending duo at the Moose was the same.

Now that we have been there for ten years, West Carleton Electric has a bit of following. We aren't quite up to the level that Greenbush Generals are at (the only other Eastern Ontario team this year) who have been going for 30+ years, but there were Elkland locals cheering us on by name at our games, with their favourite appearing to be Mad Dog Murphy.

One definite memory from this year's event comes from our first game. This year's team had two sets of brothers. One set of brothers had a family event on Friday night. They decided they would leave Saturday morning - after an open bar wedding - and drive down to PA for our game at noon. The other set of brothers came down on Friday night and brought along their dad. When the unsurprising call came from the one set of brothers that they were going to be late, I realized I had only eight players for our first game. I did the only reasonable thing I could do - tried to recruit the guys' dad (who we will call Mr B) to play. The conversation went something like this.

Me: "Hey Mr B, we only have eight guys for the first couple of innings."

Mr B: "Uh.....ok. So?"

Me: "So, I need you to play."

Mr B: "Uh...well I only have sandals."

Me: "I have size 9 running shoes - they will fit you right?"

Mr B:"Uh...well I guess. But I don't have ball pants."

Me: "Well first of all we are in Elkland, you can play in your shorts. But I have an extra pair so you can wear those."

Mr B: "Uh...well I don't have a glove."

Me: "Jeez, are you kidding me? We will find you a glove,"

Mr B: "Ok, I guess I am in!"

So, out of excuses, Mr. B got put in the starting line up and played with his two boys. While playing right field, he chased down a double to corner, and had a good hack at the plate (pop out to second) before the reinforcements arrived. Secretly, despite his 'reluctance', I think he was pretty pumped to play. His comment afterwards: "Not bad for going twenty-one years between starts!"

I will summarize as I do every year - Bill Sherman and the ESA guys put on an excellent event, with great fastball at a fantastic venue. If you haven't been and you love fastball, you need to go at least once. And if you need a team to play on, call me because I probably have a roster spot for you!

Footage from the 1987 ISC World Tournament

I stumbled across this video on YouTube about the 1987 ISC World Tournament in Saskatoon.

It's an incredible treasure trove of 80s fastball. For those of you that played men's ball in that decade (my first season of Men's ball was in 1990), it gives you an impression of what it was like back then.

Some of the highlights, besides the seriously 80s wardrobes on the presenters, include:

  • Dudes with moustaches facing the top pitchers in the world with no helmets.
  • Discussion of how players use "aluminum or wood bats, most just over 30 ounces".
  • Hall of Fame pitchers like Brad Underwood, Mike Piechnik, Ty Stofflet and many more.
  • Pitcher domination - there were 55 of 90 games were shutouts at the tournament in 1996. Lots of pitchers with 0.00 ERAs. Discussion of how Jimmy Moore had a streak of 59 2/3 consecutive shutout innings.
  • Lots of guys working on the slap bunt.

Overall a great timewaster of a video if you like fastball history.

Micksburg 10 Kars 6 - the details

from Scott Conroy

The Twins and Aces met in Micksburg Thursday night in front of another good crowd. The atmosphere for the Greater Ottawa Fastball League Championship Round game was electric at the ball park as two talented teams met in the winners game of the double elimination tournament.

Kars threatened in the top of 1, with two out Nick Ellis singled and moved to third of a pair of passed balls. Joran Graham, the starter for Micksburg, was able to get a strike out to retire the side.

Brad Porter grabbed the ball for the Aces. The top of the lineup for Micksburg was able to get on the board early. Jamey Mick singled with 1 out before scoring on a Joran Graham triple. Graham would score on a fielder’s choice RBI by Corey Costello to make it 2-0 after 1.

The home side would add another run in the bottom of the second inning. Kyle Jackson singled to lead off and was bunted to second by the second basemen Matt McIntyre. Connor Moss was credited the RBI singling in Jackson to make a 3-0 score after 2 complete.

Kars was not ready to back down, plating five in the third frame. Kristian Knapp walked to start the inning before Cory Morrison singled. The bats for Kars kept going as they batted around. Nick Ellis, Matt Alkerton, and Chad Milne all had RBI hits in the inning.

The lead was 5-3 for the Aces until the bottom of the fourth where the back and forth would continue. The Twins were able to tie the game up. Matt McIntyre had a good eye at the plate battling out a walk before stealing second base. Quinton Rook kept his hot bat going with an RBI single to score McIntyre. The McIntyres remained dangerous as cousin Andrew was then able to drive a ball to the fence in right to score Rook on an RBI triple.

The scoring was not done. Kars threatened with two outs in the fifth. Matt Alkerton was replaced on third base by Chad Milne due to the two out catching rule. Milne was aggressive taking home as soon as a pitch got past Costello to reclaim the lead for Kars.

The Twins were able to pile on five in the bottom half after going into the inning with a 6-5 score. Graham lead off with a single. Corey Costello drew a walk. A bloop was able to drop in shallow right centre field. However, with the runners holding with none out, Kars was able to get the runner at second base.  Chad Costello took second on a wild pitch to set up Kyle Jackson’s 2 RBI double. Luke Severson would come into the game to face Matt McIntyre. Jackson then took off for third during the next at bat. The throw got past Kars defenders to allow Jackson to score the third run of the inning. McIntyre singled and Quinton Rook walked. Scott Conroy came into the game for a pinch hit and was able to hit a 2 RBI double to extend the lead to a 10-6 score for Micksburg.

Joran Graham was able to shut down Kars in the next two innings to seal the win. Brad Porter was tagged in the loss with Severson in relief in arguably one of the most exciting games this season in the GOFL.

The Twins await the winner of the Quyon Flyers and Kars Aces game for the championship game in Micksburg.

West Carleton Electric finishes 3-2 at Elkland Labour Day

West Carleton Electric finished in fifth place at the 13-team Elkland Labour Day "Durk Sherman Classic" men's open fastpitch tournament in Pennsylvania.

The Electric opened with a loss, reeled off three straight wins, then lost on Monday morning to finish 3-2. See below for links to stats for each game.

East Coast Renegades (Long Island, NY) 8 West Carleton Electric 6
West Carleton lost a winable game on Saturday at noon, coming up short as Steve Cavanagh took the loss in relief of Jeff Barber. Andy Barber - who was catching - hit a homer, as did Chad Milne. Nick Ellis went 3 for 4. Evan Lydaker was the winning pitcher.

West Carleton Electric 5 Knoxville, PA Bellys 4
WC squeaked out a close win over a scrappy team of youngsters who had some veteran help at pitcher and catcher. Andy Barber earned the pitching win striking out 15, while Marvelous Marv Flynn and Lucas Hahn threw for the locals. Dean "Guns" Vanzile hit the walk off single in the bottom of the seventh, driving in Matt McIntyre who had doubled. Nick Ellis hit two triples and Jeff Cavanagh was 2 for 3 for the Electric.

West Carleton Electric 6 Greenbush, ON Generals 4
Sunday afternoon saw the two eastern Ontario teams in attendance square off. The Electric got out to a 6-0 lead after three and held on for the win. Andy Barber got the win and Luke Severson took the loss. Jeff Barber - who was catching for Andy - went 2 for 2 with a walk, 3 RBIs and hit a two run homer. Milne and Neil Murphy had RBIs for WC. Todd Brayton went 3 for 3 for Greenbush and his son Jake went 2 for 3.

West Carleton Electric 10 Dick's Deli (Williamsport, PA) 1
Immediately following, the Electric got another win with Jeff Barber throwing a three-hitter over the five inning mercy rule shortened game. JBarb also had a monster game at the plate going 3 for 3 with a homer and 5 RBIs. Nick Ellis went 2 for 3 and a pair of RBIs. Trevor Hall took the loss for the Dick's.

CPI (Oswego, NY) 9 West Carleton Electric 6
The 3-1 record moved the Electric on to Monday to face off against CPI, the champs at the Gil Read and the ISC II event in Illinois. Andy Barber took the loss while Jeff Mayer went the distance for CPI. The Oswego team was up 6-2 at one point, but West Carleton rallied for a run in the sixth and three in the seventh to tie it. In the bottom of the seventh, with the game tied Eduardo Leonardo lead off with a double, prompting WC to intentionally walk Sam Roes. The next batter popped up, but Josh Buckley hit a walk off homer to left field that just stayed fair to win the game. For WC, Jeff Barber had another homer in this game, as did Andy Barber. Neil Murphy had two RBIs.
