The game lives on

I think there a lot of things to like about men's fastpitch softball. If you are a regular reader of this blog, you probably think so too.

One of the things I feel is important is the long time connections made over the years through fastball, and how involvement in the game can continue with new generations.

Consider this photo.

This picture was taken at the Bay Bash tournament up in Campbell’s Bay, QC in July 2003. That's Al Kuehl of Shawville at bat, and I'm pretty sure Chad Costello of Micksburg is catching.

Bay Bash was a really fun tournament featuring some great softball. In the red circle in the upper left corner, you can see me in a black jacket watching Al bat. To the left of me, in the West Carleton jersey, is Don Rorwick. We were probably playing the next game after Micksburg vs Shawville or maybe had just finished.

I only knew Al a bit then, as the guy who ran the Shawville team.

If Al and I would have seen each other in the beer tent at Bay Bash afterwards (and I am almost certain we did!) we may have said a passing "hello". But we are friends now, and he likes to talk about softball as much as I do.

Twenty-three years later, Al and I play on the same Shawville Men's Fastpitch League team.

And what's even better is this past weekend Al's son Cade played on the Tri-City Logsplitters team in the Glen tournament, alongside my sons Fitzroy Junior, the Caveman as well as Don's sons (and my boys' cousins) Matthew and Dylan Rorwick, and they all had a great time doing so.

Here is a picture from this past weekend showing the Logsplitters being half made up by our five boys.

Imagine telling Al, Don and I in that beer tent that almost a quarter century later our boys (some of whom didn't even exist then - only Fitzroy Junior and Matthew were born and were babies at the time) would be teammates in a future tournament!

Two photos, separated by 23 years, demonstrating a cross-generational connection of our game. This is something to embrace, celebrate and be proud of. Some say our men's game is dying, and while it will never will be as big as it was "in the day", it is connections like this which help the game live on.

Trics get by Micksburg 4-3

West Carleton Electric picked up a 4-3 win in Greater Ottawa Fastball League play in Micksburg on Thursday night over the Twins.

Adam Rueckwald got the complete game win, while John Enright took the loss in three innings of relief of Noah Fleurie.

WC got on the board with a run in the first. Colton Lecuyer was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a ground out, took third on a flyout and scored when his dad Sean doubled.

Twins tied it up in the second. Fleurie doubled to start the inning. A single by Jason McIntyre with two out made it 1-1.

West Carleton added a run in the fifth. Trevor Barton lead off with a single, was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dylan Rorwick, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on Bryce Rebertz's infield single.

Micksburg again responded with a run in the sixth. Matt McIntyre tripled to right, then scored on a throwing error.

The Trics put up two in top of seven. Colton Lecuyer lead off with a single, was moved to second on a Trevor Barton sac bunt, and got to third on a single by Rorwick. Sean Lecuyer singled to again cash his son. Rebertz walked to load the bases. Gabe Brown singled to score a run, with a close play at the plate erasing another potential score, as Jason McIntyre threw out a runner from centrefield.

The Twins attempted to comeback in the bottom of seven. John Enright bunted for a single, then Jason McIntyre singled with one out; a bobble in the field put runners on second and third. Dan Enright's sacrifice fly to centre was his first ever GOFL RBI, and got the game within one, but after a line drive screamer to right field by Andy McIntyre was caught by Ryland Hill, the WC victory was secured.

The Seniors earned a hard-fought victory over the Northstars in a high-scoring and competitive matchup that featured strong offensive bursts from both teams. The Northstars jumped out to an early advantage in the top of the first inning, highlighted by a Todd Smart single that brought in two runs and helped build a 3–0 lead. Despite the early deficit, the Seniors gradually responded at the plate, keeping pace as runs were traded throughout the game. The turning point came in the fifth inning when the Seniors erupted for four runs, delivering the decisive blow that swung momentum firmly in their favor. From there, John Enright took control late in the game, shutting down the Northstars’ offense and preserving the lead to secure the win for the Seniors.

Game 2
Brewers 3 Golden Gloves 1 In a tightly contested fastball game, the Brewers defeated the Golden Gloves 3–1 in a matchup defined by strong pitching and solid defense. Both teams struggled to generate offense early as the pitchers controlled the game and kept scoring chances to a minimum. The breakthrough came when Brendan Hennessy delivered a clutch double off Blake Bramburger, driving in two runs and giving the Brewers a crucial lead. The Golden Gloves threatened to respond later in the game with runners on base, but the Brewers came up with a huge defensive play when Jordan Laronde turned an inning-ending double play to stop the rally and keep the runners from scoring. The Brewers continued to rely on their pitching and defense to protect their advantage, limiting the Golden Gloves' opportunities the rest of the way. Hennessy’s timely hit and Laronde’s key defensive effort proved to be the difference as the Brewers earned a hard-fought 3–1 victory in an exciting pitching duel.
