North Augusta wins North Leeds title (updated, with names)

The North Augusta Trappers won the North Leeds Men's Fastball League playoff title with a 13-2 victory over Lyn Lightning last night in Lyn. The Trappers won the best of three series two straight.

Luke Severson had the pitching win, striking out 12. Carley Shane took the loss and had relief from Jeff McNish. 

Kristian Knapp hit a homer on the first pitch of the night for NA. Jamie Finucan also had a homer for the Champs. Andrew Fortier's two run homer for Lyn scored their only runs.

Orleans defeats Los Caballos

The Orleans Rebels wrapped up their Greater Ottawa Fastball League regular season with a 7-0 win over Los Caballos. Andy Barber had the win and Will Lowe took the loss.

Senior and Masters Men's Canadian Championships underway in Saskatoon

The Softball Canada Championship for Men and Masters Men are underway in Saskatoon. Info here: Men's and Master Men's (softball.ca).

There are a couple of local players involved. 

Tyler Branchaud of the Manotick Brewers of the Greater Ottawa Fastball League is playing for the ON2 Kitchener Hallman Cubs.  Joran Graham of the Micksburg Twins is an "import" for the SK1 Bruno Merchants.

Harbour Ball playoffs get started

The Fitzroy Harbour Men's Fastball League playoffs got started last night four Game 1 matches in quarter-final best of three series.

West Carleton Rona U17 (#1) beat Campbell Fuels (#8) 9-4, Grandor Farms (#2) came back to defeat Clean Cut Construction (#7) 12-9, and Hicks Custom Interiors (#5) won over Ottawa Valley Coffee (#4) 12-2.

In the other series, Bren Electric (#3) and Baird Carpentry (#6) were in the bottom of the ninth inning, with the game tied 9-9, when the lights went out. The game will be resumed next week.

North Leeds Final

The North Leeds Men's Fastball League final series game two is tonight (Thursday) at 8:15 p.m. in Lyn.

North Augusta won game one of the best of three series over Lyn on Tuesday by a score of 3-2 in 8 innings. Cory Alkerton got the win striking out 17. Andrew Fortier took the loss, striking out 11. Travis Wing had a homer for Lyn. Kurtis Summers hit the walk off single in the bottom of the eighth for North Augusta.

The NLMFL has seven teams. Westport was first in the regular season with a 9 win 3 loss record, but they lost in the semi-finals to Lyn. Other teams in the league are Spencerville, Maitland, Eastons Corners and Greenbush.

Orleans defeats Kars

In Greater Ottawa Fastball League play in Manotick on Wednesday night, the Orleans Rebels defeated the Kars Aces 7-0. Andy Barber had the win and hit a home run. Jefferson Roman also hit a homer. Cory Alkerton took the loss and had relief from Todd Templeton.

72nd Annual Durk Sherman Classic schedule announced

The schedule has been released for the 72nd Annual Durk Sherman Classic in Elkland, Pennsylvania. 

There are 10 teams participating, four from eastern Ontario: West Carleton Electric, Westport Lumberjacks, Kingston Axemen and the Tri-City Logsplitters, a 23U team from West Carleton captained by the Caveman and Fitzroy Junior.

Plattsville wins U20 Canadians

The Plattsville Lightning won the Softball Canada U20 Men's Canadian Championship in Carp with a 4-1 win over Rostock Braves in the final. Rostock had previously won both the Ontario Elimination tournament and the Provincials. 

Plattsville defeated Équipe Québec 8-7 in eight innings in the semi-final to advance. Québec had a 7-0 lead in the second inning. Hunter Beauregard and Cade Keuhl of the Quyon Flyers both won bronze as part of the Québec team.

Kudos to the organizing committee who did a tremendous job putting on this national level event in Carp.

Micksburg beats Kars

The Micksburg Twins defeated the Kars Aces 7-0 in a Greater Ottawa Fastball League game played the Saturday of the U20 Men's nationals in Carp.

Joran Graham earned the win while Cory Alkerton took the loss. Jared Steege hit two homers for Micksburg.

Three teams left at U20s

After playoff Saturday at the Softball Canada U20 Men's Canadian Championship in Carp, three teams remain for Sunday.

Équipe Québec will play Plattsville (ON2) Lightning at noon. Loser will get bronze, winner moves on the gold medal game to follow versus Rostock (ON1) Braves.

Saturday saw West Carleton Electric get eliminated in a tight 7-6 loss to the Nova Scotia Selects. 

Québec had to win a play in game 3-0 versus Newfoundland & Labrador first thing in the morning to advance. Then they beat Napanee 7-3, followed by getting by Nova Soctia 7-1.

Rostock defeated Plattsville 3-2 in the first vs second place game to advance to the Final.

Playoffs to begin at U20 Canadians

The playoff matchups have been determined at the Softball Canada U20 Men's Canadian Championship tournament in Carp. There are nine teams and the standings after four days of pool play area as follows:

WC 4-2 after Day 3, Rostock undefeated

West Carleton Electric finished a very long Day 3 at the Softball Canada U20 Men's Canadian Championship in Carp with a 4-2 win-loss record.

The first game of the day was a tough 7-6 loss against the defending champions from Napanee. Noah Fleurie took the loss after a walk off single by Matt Musclow in the bottom of the seventh. Ryland Hill had the start. Noah Fleurie, Dylan Rorwick and Finn Barton all had homers for WC.

The second game saw West Carleton get by Saskatoon Selects 6-1. Dakota McComb got the complete game win. Dylan Rorwick had a two RBI triple.

The final game of the day was a lengthy and wild one, with WC prevailing 7-6 over Newfoundland. At one point the Electric had a 7-2 lead. The NL team had a man on third with two out in the bottom of the seventh who tried to take home on a wild pitch but was tagged out to end the game. McComb again had the complete game win. Conner Hopper had a two run homer for WC.

Rostock Braves remain undefeated at the event at 6-0. They play WC on the final round robin day (Friday) at 8:15 p.m. The other remaining pool play game for WC is at 2 p.m. vs Plattsville Lightning who have a 4-1 record.

Day two (mostly) complete at U20 Canadians

Rain interfered with the schedule at the Softball Canada U20 Men's Canadian Championship in Carp, but five of the eight schedule games got played.

West Carleton Electric only got to play one of their two scheduled games, losing 6-3 to the Nova Scotia Selects. Dakota McComb took the loss and had relief from Noah Fleurie. The Electric got down 6-0 but scraped back with a sacrifice fly by Finn Barton and a two RBI double by Gabe Brown. However, they fell short and lost their first game of the event. Their 2-1 record puts them third in the nine-team event.

WC's second game on Wednesday was pushed to Thursday morning at 9 a.m. (on Diamond 2) vs the defending champions, Napanee Express.

Day one complete at U20s in Carp

The first day at the Softball Canada U20 Men's Canadian Championship in Carp was a successful day, as 8 games were completed and the opening ceremonies were held.

Host team West Carleton Electric sit atop the standings after defeating Équipe Québec 7-4 and Fisher River Hawks from Manitoba 16-1. 

Dakota McComb, added by WC for the event, had the pitching win versus Québec. Gabe Brown earned the win vs Manitoba; Dylan Rorwick hit a homer.

The Electric play at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday vs Nova Scotia Selects followed by 8:15 p.m. against the defending champions from Napanee.

Rostock Braves are the only other team at two wins and no losses. Québec, Napanee, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Plattsville (ON) all have won one and lost one. Manitoba and Saskatoon (SK) are winless.

U20 Canadians in Carp start on Tuesday

The Softball Canada U20 Men's Canadian Championship starts at 10 a.m. on Tuesday in Carp at the Fairgrounds. 

The event features nine teams from six provinces.

Saskatoon, SK Selects
Fisher River, MB Hawks
Rostock, ON1 Braves
Plattsville, ON2 Lightning 
Napanee, ON (defending champions) Express
Équipe Québec
Nova Scotia Selects 
Newfoundland 
Plus the host West Carleton Electric.

The host team has four Greater Ottawa Fastball League players on the roster: Gabe Brown, Conner Hopper and Dylan Rorwick from West Carleton Electric men's team and Noah Fleurie from the Micksburg Twins.

Each team plays two games a day from Tuesday to Friday, with the top six advancing to Saturday playoffs, and semi-final and final on Sunday.

Cobourg wins ISC Legends

The Cobourg Force won the International Softball Congress Legends (50+) division at the 12 team event held in Surrey, BC over the past week. The Force came from behind to defeat the All Seasons Patriots from Pennsylvania 6-5 in the final game.

Dan Loney from Cornwall, a former Greater Ottawa Fastball League player with I4C Victory and former New York Gremlins player, was recognized on the Legends All Tournament team for his performance with All Seasons.

Jeff Lane, who is from Florida but has played on many area tournament teams in the past including Broker for Tickets and Kanata Storm was also recognized. Laner played for Cobourg.

Only one active player from the GOFL participated in the ISC Legends this year, some blogger from West Carleton Electric who played for Waterdown Hammer.

Hill United Chiefs win ISC title

The Hill United Chiefs won the International Softball Congress title on Saturday in Surrey, BC, winning three games on the final day including the last match up 7-1 over the New York Gremlins.

Greater Ottawa Fastball League player Tyler Branchaud of the Manotick Brewers is a member of the Hill United team. Branchaud was the only GOFLer playing at the ISCs this year.

Orleans, Kars win in Manotick

There were two games in the Greater Ottawa Fastball League in Manotick on Wednesday night.

The first game saw Orleans Rebels defeat the Manotick Brewers 7-4. Andy Barber was the winning pitcher and Carley Shane took the loss. Spencer Rodd hit a homer for the Rebels. 

The late game saw the Kars Aces edge the Rebels 8-7. Nick Ellis and Cory Alkerton pitched for Kars, while Barber threw for Orleans. Kristian Knapp hit a homer for Kars.

Lecuyer an All Star

Softball Canada names all stars for round robin play at Canadian Championships.

At the U17 Boys Canadian Championship last week in St Gervais, QC this past week, Fitzroy Harbour's Colton Lecuyer was named an all star infielder. Colton plays for the Napanee Express. In 9 games he batted .409, with 9 hits including two triples and a home run. He also batted in 15 runs and walked 7 times. He was perfect in the field with no errors.

Équipe Québec wins U17 Canadians

Équipe Québec won the Softball Canada U17 Boy's Canadian Championship in St-Gervais, QC today with an exciting 2-1 win over Napanee Express. A huge crowd was on hand for the final game. 

Prince Albert, SK won bronze after losing 7-0 to Napanee earlier in the day.

Shawville's Cade Kuehl is a member of Équipe Québec and scored the winning run in the gold medal game. He plays in the Greater Ottawa Fastball League with Quyon Flyers, the Shawville League and in Harbour Ball.

Bryce Rebertz, Colton Lecuyer and Finn Barton, who all play Harbour Ball with WC Rona U17 were silver medalists with Napanee.

The Amherstview Athletics, who have several players from the Stittsville team in the Glen Cairn league, finished fifth in the eight team event.

Rostock wins U20 Provincials

The Rostock Braves won the Ontario Amateur Softball Association U20 Men's Provincial A tournament in Cambridge on Sunday with an 11 inning 9-7 win over New Hamburg in the final.

The Braves, who had only 9 players for the weekend, will be favourites at the Softball Canada U20 Men's Canadian Championship in Carp later this month (August 20-25).

Plattsville Lighting, who will also be in Carp, won bronze.

Other teams in Carp are host team West Carleton Electric who finished fifth and defending champions Napanee Express who were sixth.

Final day at U17 Canadians

There are four teams remaining at the Softball Canada U17 Boy's Canadian Championship in St-Gervais, QC.

Prince Albert, SK plays Chatsworth, ON at 10:30 a.m. with the winner to play Napanee, ON at 12:30 p.m.

Équipe Québec awaits the winner of the semi in the Final at 3 p.m. after defeating Napanee in a wild 18-11 match-up in the first vs seconds game.

Four teams remain at U20 Provincials

The top four ranked teams are the ones remaining to play on Sunday at the Ontario Amateur Softball Association Men's U20 Provincial A tournament in Cambridge. 

#4 Chatsworth plays #2 Plattsville at 9 a.m., winner to play #1 Rostock at 11 a.m.

#3 New Hamburg waits in the final at 1 p.m.

West Carleton Electric lost their first game 14--7 to New Hamburg, then rebounded to beat Tavistock 8-1. They were eliminated by a very close 5-4 loss on Saturday afternoon to Chatsworth.

Kaladar and Tavistock went 0-2. Napanee lost to Chatsworth, beat Kaladar and lost to Plattsville.

U20 Provincial A event

The two eastern Ontario teams both saw early leads disappear as they lost Friday night at the Ontario Amateur Softball Association U20 Men's Provincial A event in Cambridge. 

Kaladar Kings got out to a 3-1 lead early on top see Rostock Braves, but ended up losing 10-3.

Similarly, West Carleton Electric were up 7-1 at one point but ended up losing 14-7 to the New Hamburg Mustangs. 

In other games, Chatsworth beat Napanee 10-0 and Plattsville beat Tavistock 11-1. 

Play resumes tomorrow at 9 a.m.

Napanee and Québec undefeated at U17 Canadians

Both teams with local players - Napanee Express and Équipe Québec- are undefeated with 5-0 records at the Softball Canada U17 Boy's Canadian Championship in St. Gervais, QC.

With rain all day today, the schedule had to be modified as no games were played on Friday.

The two undefeated teams are scheduled to play on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Flyers get by Brewers

The Quyon Flyers got by the Manotick Brewers 8-2 in Greater Ottawa Fastball League play in Shawville on Thursday night.

Drew Hathway took the win while Carley Shane was tagged with the loss.

Manotick was up 2-1 until Steve McCord two run pinch hit homer in the fifth for Quyon sparked a 6 run inning.

Micksburg wins both in DH

The Micksburg Twins won both games of a neutral site Greater Ottawa Fastball League doubleheader over the Orleans Rebels in Carp on Thursday night. 

Twins edged the Rebels 2-0 in game one. Joran Graham had the win, striking out 19. Andy Barber took the loss. Jared Steege hit a two run shot for the Twins.

The night cap was a 5-1 win for Micksburg. John Enright was the winning pitcher and Barber threw again for Orleans. Graham had a homer for the Twins.

Manotick wins on Wednesday (updated)

The Manotick Brewers won the Wednesday night Greater Ottawa Fastball League game in Manotick 9-8 over affiliate team Los Caballos.

Carley Shane had the win while Will Lowe took the loss in relief of Matt McKay.

Ryan Clare and Mark Corbett had homers for Manotick. Fredyan Carpio had two home runs for Los Caballos and Pedro Lopez also had a homer.

U17 Boys' Canadians in St Gervais get started today

The Softball Canada U17 Boys' Canadian Championship starts today in St. Gervais, QC. with eight teams participating: Quebec, Newfoundland, four from Ontario and two from Saskatchewan. 

The host Equipe Quebec will have Cade Keuhl from Shawville catching for them - he plays for Quyon Flyers in the Greater Ottawa Fastball League and also the Shawville league and Harbour Ball in Fitzroy.

Amherstview (ON4) includes several players from eastern Ontario, many of who are with the Stittsville team in the Glen Cairn Men's Fastball League, including Daniel Read who also plays for Kars Aces in the GOFL.

Napanee (ON1) fresh off their win at the Ontario Summer Games will be a favourite at this event. Bryce Rebertz, Colton Lecuyer and Finn Barton are with the Express and they play with WC Rona U17 in the Fitzroy Harbour Men's Fastball League and have also played a bit in the GOFL.

Napanee wins U17 gold

The Napanee Express went undefeated to win the Ontario Amateur Softball Association Provincial A tournament on the weekend, as part of the Ontario Summer Games in London.

The Express beat Chatsworth 10-0 in the title game. They outscored their opponents 67-9 over the five games played.

Three players on the Express are members of WC Rona U17 which plays in the Fitzroy Harbour Men's Fastball League: Bryce Rebertz, Finn Barton and Colton Lecuyer.

Newfoundland wins U23 title

The Murno Mariners from Newfoundland won the U23 Men's Canadian Championship gold medal on Sunday with a 6-3 win over Delisle Pride from Saskatchewan. Alex Baillargeon, an out of province pitcher from Quebec for NL.won top player of the Playoff Round and had the win in relief of Mitchell Whelan.

The Pride had defeated Nova Scotia Selects earlier that day, so NS got the bronze.

Wiarton Red Devils, which had two local players (Joe Mick and Ty Branchaud) finished fourth.

Depending champions Tavistock Merchants who had Jack Becker from the Manotick Brewers finished fifth in the seven team event.

The U23s Men's will be back in Kitchener for 2025, along with the Men's and Masters Men's Canadian Championship.

NL, SK and NS remain in contention at U23s

At the Softball Canada U23 Men's Canadian Championship in Kitchener, three teams remain in contention for medals on Sunday.

Wiarton Red Devils, the last remaining Ontario team, lost 5-4 to Nova Scotia Selects on Saturday night and finished fourth.

Nova Scotia plays Delisle Pride from Saskatchewan at 11 a.m., with the winner advancing to the gold medal game against the Murno Mariners from Newfoundland at 1:30 p.m.

Wiarton lone ON team at U23 Men's Canadian Championship remaining

After two games in the playoff round at the U23 Men's Canadian Championship in Kitchener, the Wiarton Red Devils are the only Ontario team remaining. 

Wiarton defeated Harwood Corners of Ontario 5-4 in 8 innings in the first game of Playoff Saturday. Afterwards, the two-time defending champion Tavistock, ON Merchants lost a 1-0 squeaker to the Nova Scotia Selects.

Shallow Lake was the fourth Ontario entrant but did not qualify for Saturday. 

Wiarton will play Nova Scotia at 8:15 p.m. The winner of that game plays on Sunday at 11 a.m. and is guaranteed a medal. 

Currently the Murno Mariners of Newfoundland and Labrador are playing Delisle Pride of Saskatchewan in the first vs second game. The winner advances directly to the gold medal game at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. The loser plays at 11 a.m.

Playoff Saturday set for U23 Men's

With pool play completed, the final rankings are completed and the playoff games set for Saturday at the U23 Softball Canada Men's Canadian Championship in Kitchener.

The Delisle Pride from Saskatchewan, the 2023 silver medalists, had five wins and one loss and finished first in the round robin

The Murno Mariners from Newfoundland and Labrador and defending champions Tavistock, ON Merchants both finished with 4-2 records, but the NL team gets second seed based on head to head play.

Wiarton, ON2 Red Devils had an even three wins three losses to get the fourth seed, while last year's bronze medalists Harwood Corners (ON1) and the Nova Scotia Selects both went 2-4, with Harwood getting the five seed based on head to head.

Shallow Lake, ON3 Sting finished seventh with one win and five losses and did not make the playoff round. Today's games at the Peter Hallman Ballyard, which will all also be livestreamed are as follows:

C2 - (5th) Harwood Corners vs (4th) Wiarton Red Devils at 1 p.m.

C3 - 6th) Nova Scotia Selects vs (3rd) Tavistock Merchants at 3:15p.m.

C1 - (2nd) Murno Mariners vs (1st) Delisle Pride at 6 p.m.

C4 - Winner of C2 vs Winner of C3

Sunday games:

C5 - Loser of C1 vs Winner of C4 (loser gets bronze) at 11 a.m.

C6 - Winner of C1 vs Winner of C5 (gold medal game) at 1:30 p.m.

Micksburg wins 4-3

Report from Blake Bramburger 

The Micksburg Twins defeated the Quyon Flyers 4-3 in Micksburg on Thursday night in Greater Ottawa Fastball League play.

Joran Graham earned the win and hit a two run homer. Jared Steege and Paul Griffith also had RBIs for the Twins.

Drew Hathway took the loss. Lane McMurtry has two RBIs for Quyon.

Our on the scene correspondent reports 35 fans in attendance at this one.

Standings after Day 1 at the U23 Men's Canadian Championship

The standings after Day 1 of the U23 Men's Canadian Championship at Peter Hallman Ballyard in Kitchener are below. The teams each have four more games remaining (two on Thursday, two on Friday) in the round robin, with the top 6 teams advancing to Saturday's playoff round.

The two undefeated teams face each other today at noon on Diamond 2.

Orleans comes back to beat Quyon

The Orleans Rebels defeated the Quyon Flyers 8-7 in the first ever Greater Ottawa Fastball League game in Luskville, QC on Wednesday night.

As the teams had two games to make up and limited time to do so, this will go in the standings as a "four pointer" for Orleans.

Andy Barber earned the win on the slab and hit a home run for Orleans. Matt Greer took the loss.

The Flyers were up 5-2 after six complete innings. Orleans scored six in the top of the seventh. Quyon responded with two runs, and a the winning run on second base with two out. Kevin Shonfield made a diving catch in right field to get the final out and end the game.

Manotick and Osgoode split doubleheader

The Manotick Brewers and Osgoode Chiefs split a doubleheader in Greater Ottawa Fastball League play in Manotick on Wednesday night.

The first game saw the Brewers win 15-2, with Carley Shane taking the win and Nolan Holmes the loss with relief from Jack Dewan. Jared Furlong hit two homers - a two-run shot and a grand slam - in the same inning for the Brewers.

The night cap had the Chiefs winning 12-4. Todd Templeton earned the win in relief of Bobby Holmes. Carley Shane had the loss and had relief from Trevor Beaulieu.
