WC Electric season meets soggy end

WC Electric season meets soggy end

By Jake Davies - West Carleton Online

CARP – In weather best suited for ducks, the Greater Ottawa Fastball League (GOFL) hosted three playoff games in Carp last Saturday (Oct. 2), and the West Carleton Electric’s 2021 season has come to an end.

For West Carleton’s top fastball team, and the GOFL, 2021 was a return to play following a COVID-19 cancelled 2020. Most tournaments were also cancelled, including the Men’s U23 National Fastball Championship scheduled for Carp in the summer of both 2020 and 2021.

While the record book may not look fondly on the ‘Trics in 2021 who went 3-7 in the GOFL regular season finishing in the six-team basement and then bowed out of the double-knockout playoff tournament losing two straight. On Saturday, the Electric kicked off a soggy triple-header at the Carp Fairgrounds, losing 8-1 to the Kars Aces and eliminating the ‘Trics from the GOFL playoffs.

For Electric player-manager Adam Brown, it was great to get back to the sport he loves.

“Big thanks to Dale and Laurie Hanna from West Carleton Electric Ltd. for their sponsorship and support this year and over the years,” Brown told West Carleton Online yesterday (Oct. 5). “They are a great help. It was really good to be back on the diamond and see everyone, both the guys on the Electric and on the other teams. And even the umpires. I really missed it and I know others did too.”

There was even a bit of a COVID-bump in attendance and many of the games this season had small crowds of enthusiastic fastball fans.

“We had some decent crowds out to games, including a doubleheader in Micksburg in front of about 100 attendees,” Brown said. “The level of play in the league was very even. Some great games. The skill difference between first place and sixth place teams is not that large.”

Following the GOFL opener for the Electric last July, Brown remarked the Electric had added some local youth joining the team in some capacity for the upcoming season. Checking back in at the end of the season, Brown says those players became contributors.

“There are lots of new young guys playing in the league, including pitchers, in their teens and 20s,” Brown said. “It will help the future of the game. We added some youth to the ‘Trics and they did great. Owen Brown (my son, 19) and Jeff Campbell, 27, are both from Fitzroy and have played in the local Harbour Ball league and were ready to make the jump to GOFL, as well as young pitcher Cory Baldwin, 21, from Kemptville who played with Owen at the U19 level back in 2019.”

The Electric, based out of Fitzroy Harbour, have spent 17 years in the GOFL. While they have no championships to date, the team played in the finals three times in 2004, 2007 and 2017. The team often travels to tournaments throughout the season, but did not do so in 2021 due to COVID-19.

Newcomer Matt Greer had a huge impact on the team. Able to play multiple positions, and play them well, Greer led the league in home runs with five (tied with Kars Aces Brad Pender).

In the first Electric playoff game, Greer struck out 14 batters scattering four hits over the game and hit a two-run home run. Greer, a Shawville resident, hit another home run in the Electric’s second playoff game scoring the team’s only run in an 8-1 loss. Greer had all three RBIs for the ‘Trics’ playoff run.

“Matt was a huge addition to the team,” Brown said. “He’s plays at the ‘open’ level, very good athlete, all-around player and great guy. And of course, our returning veterans are the glue that holds things together. Guys like Neil Murphy, Trevor Barton, Steve Cavanagh, Chris Costello who have been around for the long haul with the ‘Trics. Really looking forward to the GOFL again in 2022.”

Brown, a man with his ear down to the fastball ground, also shared a scoop for next year, including the possible return of youth softball to West Carleton.

“There’s rumoured potential GOFL expansion, stay tuned,” Brown said. “And I hope to get the minor softball back going as well in West Carleton next spring.”

In other GOFL playoff news, the Micksburg Twins defeated the Orleans Rebels 9-0 in game two of the Saturday soggy triple-header. The Manotick Brewers would defeat the Carp-based Ottawa Valley A’s 7-2.

Tonight (Oct. 6) the Rebels take on the Brewers at Pierre Rocque Field in Orleans for the right to travel to Micksburg to take on the waiting Twins in the first game of a possible two-game finals. The winner of tonight’s game will have to win two straight to become champion.

Micksburg wins GOFL title

The Micksburg Twins won the Greater Ottawa Fastball League playoff title on Friday night in Micksburg, with a 7-0 win over the Orleans Rebels in the single game final in front of an estimated crowd of about 125.

The Twins went undefeated in all three of their games in the playoff bracket to win the title. The Rebels won three and lost two - both to Micksburg.

Joran Graham was the winning pitcher for the Twins, not allowing a hit over five innings of work and striking out 11. Andy Barber took the loss for the Rebels. He also struck out 11.

Orleans got their only baserunner of the game in the first when Andy Barber reached on an error. He got to second on a wild pitch but was stranded.

The Twins got on the board in the bottom of the first. Graham walked, moved to second on wild pitch and got to third on a strikeout that required the catcher to make the play at first. Scott Conroy's hard hit ball was misplayed allowing Graham to score.

Micksburg made it 2-0 in the third. Graham was intentionally walked to lead off. After a strikeout, a ground out advanced Graham to second. Jared Steege's RBI double scored Graham.

The home team put the run rule in effect to win the game in the bottom of the fifth. After an out, there was once again an intentional walk to Graham, followed by a Chad Costello walk. Conroy's homer to centrefield made it 5-0. Steege then hit another single, followed by a Matt McIntyre triple. Joseph Mick's sac fly to left field plated McIntyre to seal the victory.

Champions - Micksburg Twins
Scott Conroy, Nolan Rook, Paul Griffith, Chad Costello, Nolan Costello, Jared Steege, Noah Fleurie, Connor Moss, Ryan McIntyre.
Joseph Mick, John Enright, Andy McIntyre, Matt McIntyre, Jamey Mick, Joran Graham

Finalists - Orleans Rebels

GOFL playoff results from Saturday

Saturday afternoon saw a Greater Ottawa Fastball League tripleheader in Carp to determine the final four teams in the playoff double knockout bracket.

Things started at 3 p.m., in a game where the weather was wet, but not the kind of weather you'd cancel a playoff game over. For the 5 p.m. game the weather got progressively worse; the sort of game where you just try to finish things off since you already started. The weather was ugly for the 7 p.m. and stayed ugly - it's shocking that they got the full seven innings in.

(The Ottawa GeeGees vs Queen's Gaels women's games were cancelled, once again showing women are far more sensible than men.)

Game 5
Kars Aces 8 West Carleton Electric 1

The Aces got by the Electric 8-1 with Gregg Garrity earning the win allowing one hit and striking out three. Trevor Lahey took the loss with relief from Matt Greer.

Kars got on the board in the first inning, with lead off man Brad Pender scoring a run on an error. West Carleton evened the score with a Greer solo shot in top of the fourth. Kars got a second run in the bottom of the fourth when Matt Alkerton walked, moved to third on Kurtis Summers single, and was plated on Cory Morrison's single.

The game got out of reach when the Aces scored six in the fifth inning. They loaded the bases on singles by Kristian Knapp and Garrity, followed by a walk to Cory Alkerton. A Nick Ellis single scored two, prompting a pitching change with starter Lahey being replaced by Greer. Three walks and a hit batsmen scored three more runs. Knapp's sacrifice fly brought in Matt Alkerton to put the run rule on and end the game at 8-1.

Game 7
Micksburg Twins 9 Orleans Rebels 0

The battle of the undefeated teams ended in five innings as the Twins beat the Rebels 9-0. Joran Graham threw the complete game shutout. Andy Barber started and took the loss with Matt Healey seeing some time in relief. Graham hit a two run shot in the first inning.

Game 6
Manotick Brewers 7 Ottawa Valley As 2

In a game played in the most unpleasant of conditions, the Brewers got out to a 5-0 lead and ended up with a 7-2 victory. Luc D'Entremont got the win. Adam Rueckwald was tagged with the loss and had relief from Todd Wilson.

D'Entremont hit a solo homerun and added a second homer, a three-run shot. Ryan Clare also had a solo homer for Manotick.

************

Given Saturday's results, the upcoming games are as follows:

Game 8: Manotick Brewers vs Kars Aces
Game 9: Winner of Game 8 vs Orleans Rebels
FINAL: Winner of Game 9 vs Micksburg Twins

Dates, times and locations for the next three GOFL playoff games will be posted shortly.
