Kemptville and Stittsville win in Fitzroy

There were two doubleheaders worth of make up games scheduled in Fitzroy Harbour on Tuesday night in order to get some Greater Ottawa Fastball League games in the books. However, a big storm blew through around 8:40 pm, leaving the diamonds unplayable so only the early games were played.

Kemptville Black Sox 12 West Carleton Electric 5
The early game on A diamond saw the home town Electric get out to a 4-1 lead after two. However, the Black Sox sent 13 men to the plate in the top of the third, with three homers, and scored 10 runs. Will Lowe got the win while Matt McKay took the loss with relief from Steve Cavanagh.

Stittsville 56ers 3 Micksburg Twins 2
This game was in the bottom of the seventh when the monsoon rains blew in, ending the game. Micksburg had a solo homer from John Enright in the top of the seventh that tied the game at 3-3, but given the weather, it went back to the last complete inning and the 56ers were awarded the 3-2 victory. Chad Costello had a homer earlier in the game for the Twins. Kyle Olson was the winning pitcher and Enright was tagged with the loss.

U16 Stittsville 56ers Earn Bronze at Qualifier

U16 Stittsville 56ers Earn Bronze at Qualifier
Will Attend Tier II “A” Provincial after Receiving Great Support from Local Softball Community

By Erin Durant

The u16 Stittsville 56ers: Top row, left to right: Carolyn Harman (coach), Jordyn LeBoutillier, Hailey Armstrong, Alison Roach, Sydney Watts, MacKenzie Bresee, Delaney Johnston, Kate Parks. Bottom row, left to right: Erin Durant (coach), Mikaylee Driver, Avery Smith, Paige Galbraith, and Brianna Flowers. Hiding in the back: coaches Brad Pender and Dale Aiken. Missing: Emmy Lecour, Jayde Shouldice and Lee Watts (manager/taker of this picture).

This past weekend the  u16 Stittsville 56ers finished third at the provincial qualifier tournament and will represent the Ottawa area, and all of Eastern Ontario, at the “A” Provincial Qualifier from August 8 – 12 in Stratford, Ontario. Although the team formally represents Stittsville, the team’s athletes live throughout the region including Stittsville, Kanata, Mountain, Winchester, Vars, Kinburn, Carp, and North Gower.

The 56ers are sponsored by Platinum Sponsor Sleepwell Property Management  as well as Beans Chevrolet, Ken White Construction, Upper Canada Elevators, the BLG Foundation, lawyer Larry Elliot, Ram Electric, Shouldice Mechanical, Ottawa-Nepean Canadians Sports Club,  Kanata Sports Club and the Water Depot. Their success this season would not be possible without the financial support from these great local businesses and many within the local softball community, as is discussed further below.

Tournament Recap

The 56ers started the tournament strong with a win Friday evening over the Oshawa Shamrocks 5-1. Avery Smith led the offence with three hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Sydney Watts was dominant in the pitching circle, striking out 14 batters while giving up only 1 walk and 4 hits in 7 complete innings.

Saturday the 56ers drew the strong Aurora Diggers team and managed an impressive 7-0 win after 7 innings. Watts again had the ball for the 56ers and threw a complete came shut out. The 56ers played excellent defence making no errors and holding the Aurora batters to no runs and stranding 6 base runners. The 56ers had 11 hits and all 56ers batters reached base safely at least once. Delaney Johnston led the offensive charge with two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs. Hailey Armstrong was the underrated hero of this game keeping the starters fresh and “fired up” with her positive attitude and non-stop cheering on the bench.

The 56ers then won their third straight game against the Whitby Eagles 10-5. Jordyn LeBoutillier and Sydney Watts combined for the win with LeBoutillier starting and finishing the game and Watts eating up innings in the middle. Every 56er had at least one hit in the game, 7 batters scored runs and 7 batters hit in RBIs in a well-rounded team effort. Offensive leaders included Johnston who batted 3/4 with an RBI and a run scored, Watts and Paige Galbraith who each had two RBIs, and Smith, Brianna Flowers and MacKenzie Bresee who each scored twice. Smith also made a fantastic sliding catch for the second out of the 7th inning which was followed by a statement strikeout by LeBoutillier to end the game. The win over Whitby guaranteed the 56ers a place in the undefeated game and a spot in the “A” Provincial Championship.

On Saturday night, the 56ers played their third game of the day against Oakville. The 56ers had a very tough start to the game by giving up 6 runs in the 1st and 2nd innings after a number of defensive errors. They settled in to “win” the rest of the game 1-0 but, unfortunately lost the contest 12-1. Galbraith made her first pitching appearance of the tournament in relief of LeBoutillier and allowed no earned runs through four innings pitched. Alison Roach scored the 56ers only run of the game after a triple in the 5th inning which was followed by a base hit by Bresee.

On Sunday the 56ers faced the Diggers again, with the winner moving on to face Oakville in the gold medal game. The 56ers led the game 5-2 before giving up 4 runs in the 6th inning and not being able to come back in the 7th – losing a heartbreaker 6-5 The 56ers committing a number of errors early in this tough game but fought back by making very big outs to keep control of the game until late. Watts pitched the complete game for the 56ers giving up 7 hits and 4 earned runs. Johnston, Bresee and Mikaylee Driver each had two hits for the 56ers. Watts helped her own cause with two RBIs and Driver added another RBI. The loss earned the 56ers the bronze medal. The Diggers went on to defeat Oakville in the finals. All three teams plus Waterloo qualified for the “A” Provincials.

Other notable individual performances from the weekend included Kate Parks who threw out 5 baserunners (arguably 6…) and caught every game for the 56ers over a very hot weekend.  Armstrong also made her long-awaited return to active duty after suffering a serious injury to her knee early in the season. Armstrong had two very strong pinch hit at-bats.

The 56ers were missing Jayde Shouldice and Emmy Lecour. Lecour is currently competing at the u16 European Championships with Team France. Both athletes will be back to help their team at the Provincials.

The other teams who have qualified for the “A” provincials are Brantford, Oakville, Milton, Lucan, Brampton, Springfield, Kawartha Lakes, Aurora, Vaughn, Palmerston and Waterloo. The medalists at the Provincial Championship have the option of representing Ontario at the Eastern Ontario Championships August 22-25 in Whitby.

A Few Words of Thanks

It has been very heartwarming this year to see so many local softball enthusiasts come together to support this team in a variety of ways.

The 56ers are the only u16 tier II competitive team east of Napanee and finding local competitive opportunities is a huge challenge. The team is grateful to teams from other divisions who provided quality local competition as we prepared for the Qualifier including the Ottawa Valley Fastball women’s league (Carp Cubs, Quyon Flyers, and u19 Ottawa South Angels), u 14 West Carleton boys,  u19 Cornwall Chaos,  u16 Tier 1 Kingston Jr. Gaels who organized an early-season game day in Kingston, and Lac St. Louis and Riv Sud who travelled to Stittsville for some great games.

The 56ers are also thankful to have received support from a number of coaches and players during our tryouts, winter training and during our season. Special thanks to Al Read, Kevin Daize, Steph Bouchey, Scott Searle, Elissa Sivel, Bruce Casselman, Ken Naylor (NCCP certifications) and Nick Ellis. The team is also supported by the SMSA executive.

Finally, the team would like to thank the local umpires who worked with our pitching staff to understand the rule changes for this year at our practices and during exhibition games. I am happy to report that not a single illegal pitch was thrown!

We hope to call on some of you for additional support as we prepare for the Provincial Championships. Thank you all.

A great moment in Gil Read Memorial Tournament history

Semi-final game between Waterdown Hammer and the Micksburg Twins.

Joran Graham is throwing well for the Twins, but in the bottom of the seventh they are down 4-2 to the Hammer who have brought in Bryan Newton from Saskatchewan for the weekend.

Scott Conroy leads things off for Micksburg with a solo homerun to make it 4-3. After a strikeout, Matt Greer launches a solo bomb to tie it up. With everyone in the beer garden now paying close attention, that brings Graham to the plate - who launches another solo shot to walk it off for a 5-4 win by the Twins.

Definitely a great moment in the Tournament's history.

Caveman's Harbour Ball debut

In Harbour Ball action tonight (Fitzroy Harbour Men's Fastball League), Campbell Fuels faced All in One Septic and Excavating.

With Campbell Fuels short a player, the 14 year old Caveman got to make his debut in the league, not counting a couple of short appearances in the past.

After playing right field for five innings, he got the nod to finish out the game on the slab, with his dad catching. Over two innings, there were no runs scored, no walks, two hits and a strikeout. Not bad for a wee fella in a men's league.

Afterwards, he joined me on the deck where dad had a pint and he had a Gatorade - "Am I allowed on here?" Yes, son, all Harbour Ballers are welcome on the deck post game!

Yes, he chose to wear his "Space Cadet" shirt for the game.

WC got on the board first with a run in the top of the second. Steve Cavanagh doubled, moved to third on a ground out and scored on an error.

Stittsville responded with two in the bottom of the second frame. Phil Brunet singled with one out. Then Scott Muir singled but the ball was misplayed by the outfielder allowing both baserunners to score.

The visitors responded in the third with three runs. Mitch Taylor led off with a single and Neil Murphy walked. Jeff Cavanagh's sac bunt advanced both runners, and they both scored on Steve Cavanagh's single. SCav advanced on a Chris Trafford single and then was plated on a McKay single to put WC up 4-2.

The 56ers got three runs in the their half of the third. John Craig walked with one out, followed by a Ryan Bond single. Craig scored on a single by Kyle Olson, and both Bond and Olson scored on Brunet's triple to put the home team up 5-4.

Silver for The Stittsville 56’ers Squirt Boys Selects

by Al Read

Left to right - Back Row – Derek Konkle – Tim Maxwell – Al Read
Middle Row – Camden Konkle – James Villeneuve – Rowan Randal – Todd Rowley – Zakk Mallette – James Parent
Front Row – Daniel Read – Finn Kylie – Hayden Bourre – Ashton Ledain – Graham Maxwell
Missing – Micah Pyefinch

The Stittsville 56’er Squirt Boys (U12) Selects team were in action on the weekend in Cambridge Ontario. The team was formed in Mid June following a busy house league season. They managed to have only one practice and an exhibition game, before being “thrown to the wolves” in Southern Ontario. But the boys rose to the challenge taking home the silver medal in the 8 team event.

The first game of the day saw the 56’ers up against a strong team from Kitchener Waterloo. Graham Maxwell got the ball for the 56’ers and was awesome on the mound. In 4 innings, Maxwell struck out 9 while the bats came to life. Scoring 9 runs in 3 innings, the 56’ers didn’t have to bat in the last inning, taking the victory 9 to 8. Maxwell was named the player of the game for Stittsville.

The second game was in the heat of the day against Lake Simcoe in a pitcher’s duel. Daniel Read got the ball for Stittsville and was dealing! After Lake Simcoe scored 1 run in the top of the 1st inning, Read shut the door the rest of the way striking out 11 in the four inning game. The only out that wasn’t a strike out was a deep fly ball to left that resulted in an amazing catch by Finn Kylie. And Kylie wasn’t done there hitting a triple in the second inning, however the 56’ers were unable to cash him and after 3 innings Lake Simcoe was still leading 1-0. Fortunately, the bats came alive in the 4th. A lead off home Run by Graham Maxwell and back to back hits from Ashton Ledain and Daniel Read, put the score at 1-1 with runners on 2nd and 3rd. James Parent stepped up and stroked a single and put the 56’ers up 3-1. Parent also came around to score and the 56’ers took the game 4-1. With 11 strike outs and a big hit in the 4th, Read was named the player of the game for Stittsville.

With an 2-0 record heading into the final game of the round robin, the 56’ers took on the St. Catharine’s Athletics. Todd Rowley took the ball for the 56’ers and was throwing his heart out on the mound. Unfortunately for Rowley, the long day in the heat got to some of the guys and uncharacteristically, some errors followed giving St Catharine’s a 7-1 lead after 1 and half. The boys rallied for him though with 5 runs in the second to bring them within 1, including Rowley himself stealing home.  After a couple runs in the 3rd were scored, they 56’ers changed the pitcher, bringing Read in with the bases loaded. The Athletics’ still managed to score 4 staking them to an 11-6 lead. In the bottom of the third however the bats for Stittsville wouldn’t go away. Everyone hit, including some massive deep balls by Zakk Mallett, Ashton Ledain and Read. The 56’ers tied the game at 11 heading into the last inning. Read was again dealing and shut the Athletics down aided by an amazing cover and throw home from James Parent that led to a run down between home and 3rd, preserving the tie. However, the bats for 56’ers went quiet in the bottom of the 4th and the game ended in an 11 -11 draw. Ashton Ledain was named the game MVP.

With a 2-0-1 record the 56’ers won pool B and headed to the Championship Game against the Unionville Spartans, Graham Maxwell took the hill for the 56’ers. Maxwell was awesome again, however, the strike zone seemed to get quite small for the finals. Unionville took advantage of the walks and were extremely aggressive on the bases giving the 56’ers some trouble. But the hitters for Stittsville wouldn’t go away. After 2 complete the Spartans were ahead 7 -5. In the 3rd, the 56’ers gave the ball back to Daniel Read who, like Maxwell had a difficult time with the strike zone. On walks, the Spartans managed to score 4 in the 3rd inning and 3 in the fourth inning to take a 13 -9 lead, heading into the bottom of the last inning. The team tried to rally scoring a run and had runners on the corners with 2 outs and their top hitter Ashton Ledain at the plate. Ledain scorched one, but right at the shortstop who made a great play and ended the game in a 13-10 victory for the Spartans.  Ashton Ledain who hit a ton all day long, and caught almost every inning for the 56er’s in 40-degree humidity, was named player of the tournament for the 56’ers.

The team and the coaches were thrilled with the Silver medal result. They are looking forward to the provincial’s in August where they hope to take it all.
